A man armed with a shotgun has opened fire in a street in Bratislava, killing six people and injuring up to 19. The gunman blasted his victims before turning the weapon on himself, bringing the total number of dead to seven. A three-year-old child was among those hurt, but is said to have escaped serious injury.
The shooter, who has not been named, opened up outside a children's nursery in Devinska Nova Ves, a suburb of the Slovakian capital. Eyewitnesses said the man responsible had started shooting through windows and at people in the street. A spokesperson for the emergency services said the murders started shortly after 10am local time (9am BST) and the victims included two women and four men. She said 14 people, including the three-year-old, were taken to hospital, while light injuries were treated on the spot. Three of the wounded people are critically ill.
Marta Vozbranukova, a teacher working at the nearby nursery, said she had witnessed part of the rampage. "I saw an older man carrying an automatic gun walking towards a prefab house," she said. "After a while, an injured man of a Roma origin, whose family lives in the house, ran out and fell on the ground where the gunman shot him two or three more times. The gunman then started shooting on the street."
She said no children had been at the nursery during the incident.
I was in Bratislava the weekend before last. I drove there for a day out - it's very close, now I've moved to Vienna. I didn't get shot, so that's a positive .
Apart from a very small historic town centre,...
... the rest of the place is an urban carbuncle! Take a look at all the ugly communist-style apartment blocks. No wonder people are depressed and angry.
And don't be fooled by the "Historic castle"...
... 'cos when you go around the back, they are still building it!
By the way, 10 minutes after entering the country, I was pulled over by 2 cops who demanded a 60 Euro fine as I was driving around, in the middle of the day, without my headlights on! Bastards. They don't even tell you about this at the border (I checked on the way out). Curiously, I felt like doing a bit of shooting myself at the time that happened
