He is still a politician who tries to represent the best interests of his country.
It is the biased pro-war media which will twist anything (and/or invent lies) and kill western experts who look like blowing the whistle. |

I don't imagine she was "his", but if she wasn't in his employ then that just further proves his utter idiocy. He must know how much Western media wants to paint him as a crazed fool, so if he agreed to be translated by someone he'd never met before, and who was appointed by "The West", then he is a fool. Next time he should use his own translators - people close to him who will be able to translate him extremely accurately to avoid these kinds of arguments.
If the president of Iran can't afford an aide who speaks fluent English and Farsi and is also clued up on his way of thinking, then I'll eat my hat.

That's not entirely accurate. The first English language translations of that speech (which turned out to be inaccurate) were on his own website. Unless you're suggesting that he allows "The West" to edit the English version of his own website... |

doesn't that presuppose that the defamed have to perpetually defend themselves from furthur defamation? As opposed to ignoring the largely unfounded onslaught altogether!? |

yeah i agree he shouldn't have to - but i just wish he made things easier on himself - granted, he shouldn't have to - but thats the way our government and media play things unfortunately - unless we can change that, he has to work the system. its almost like no one in the iranian government reads the propaganda against him and iran to counter it
like the holocaust, i actually agree with him on it - i have lots of questions about how many died and how etc, but why can't he make it super clear that he didn't say and doesn't think it didn't happen, but that he has questions surrounding it? like the wiped of the map thing, why doesn't he ever say - hang on, i never said that israel should be wiped of the map - i said this ...
you know, he'd be helping out massively if he could just say that. i know he shouldn't need to, i know he didn't say them - but imagine if he could just say those two sentences and clear up both those lies?
that he doesn't come out with a nice easy clear and concise response to things like these plays right into bushes and the medias hands - its almost like they don't understand how the propaganda system works here, and like it not, they're loosing the media battle because of it |

He must make many speeches every week. We hear none of them. He could be saying everything Luke & Kate want him to say .. but our compliant media would never report it, unless it can be used against him.
We should be blaming the biased media. |

i agree we've got a crap biased media, but thats what we have and he needs to work that system, he shouldn't have to - but thats where we are. take the two speeches in this thread, the university and un - he can't have been given a better chance than those two to clear it up. like i said, in agreement with salim, he shouldn't have to do it - but with the government and media using those two things against him, it just seems to me he's missed a great opportunity to put things straight - i mean, surely, mandy, you'd have liked him to put the record straight on those two issues? imagine if he'd have have come out and said 'i didn't say the holocaust didn't happen, i said ...' and 'i didn't say israel should be wiped of the map, i said ... ' - think of the muppets even now who phone galloway with those two lines?
i mean, i don't think he's a loon or an idiot, like i said maybe he just doesn't understand how the propaganda system here works - which is a real shame, because its that system thats paving the way to war for the government |

I can imagine the headlines : "Control Freak Ahmadinejad refuses to address an audience unless he hand picks his interpreter."
Ahmadinejad did well in the US. So he did play the system as best as he could. |

brief points..
Iran is a persian country 1000s of miles away with an different culture and language, they can't control western interpretations, especially when they are so clearly agenda driven. Its a total mismatch and not worth even attempting.
quick example, take the demonisation of the Khmer Rouge, when the fabrication wasn't even necessary as there were massacres over that period, but the media ran with a '2million' figure for deaths. And now if you look at the source, it was a book written in France which made no such allegation, the French author subsequently cleared up the misreprestations, but the figure was still bandied around indiscriminately.
Its well documented, it just reminds me of the techniques used to demonise Ahmadinejad. Disproportionate concerns, misinterpretations, and then ignoring contrary claims, and corrections in translation. When western journalists had the opportunity of a one-on-one and were asking questions like "will you guarantee us that you won't pursue a nuclear weapon", and "stop killing British troops in Iraq", its just not serious, the arrogance and contempt for other cultures is just stunning. |

Well even if she was his own official Iranian translator, I wouldn't be surprised of a mis-translation considering the huge brain drain in Iran - check THIS.
