Some tatmonger hs signed a two-year deal with ITV Studios to create pieces inspired by Coronation Street's 50th anniversary. The firm will be designing watches, clocks, pendants, watch jewellery, pens and cufflinks. Prices will range from £20 up to £200 for certain special editions. The tatmongers have told this reporter to tell you that they will be taking inspiration both from when Coronation Street first began 50 years ago, through to the modern day set, capturing the heritage of the show in its products.

"We are extremely excited to be working with ITV Studios in creating a unique collection of products in celebration of Coronation Street's 50th anniversary," tatmonger MD Mike Cohen told Licensing.biz. "The team at ITV Studios have been amazing and very receptive to my ideas. We are being selective in who we supply, as the right partners are key to this licence becoming a success. We are honoured to be working on such an amazing and much loved family brand."

Coronation Street characters to get Wii game to celebrate 50th anniversary
Feb 25 2010
By Paul English

CHARACTERS from Coronation Street are set to appear in their very own Wii game. The interactive game will be released to celebrate the soap's 50th anniversary later this year, it was revealed yesterday. It could even see stars from the past such as Hilda Ogden and Elsie Tanner mixing with those from the present like Rosie Webster on the bestselling console. The format and style of the game it self will be revealed later this year.

The country's longest-running TV serial is gearing up to its half century in style. The game is one of several products to be licensed by the ITV show for the anniversary of the first show - broadcast on December 9, 1960. Corrie is also endorsing a range of "Best of British" brands including Imperial Leather soap, Warburtons bread and Typhoo tea with a special 50th Birthday logo.

With massive advertising and promotions planned for the last three months of this year, it does mean viewers will be bombarded with reminders of the anniversary every time they turn on ITV. Corine Pouvreau-Miles, director of promotions at ITV's Global Entertainment arm said the tie-ups would fit in with the image of the show, adding: "It's Coronation Street, not Batman."

Furniture store chain Harveys, who sponsor the programme, plan to show old episodes in their stores. Others simply want to cash in on the name and the goodwill that goes with the anniversary later this year. Northern food firm Holland's Pies are producing a Betty's Hot Pot - after the dish served by character Betty Turpin in the Rover's Return pub in the show - for upermarkets nationwide.

Richard Hayes, marketing director of Warburtons said said: "If you are serving 18million households you need a mainstream drama to get that mass reach. Coronation Street is not an everyday thing - it's a national institution and a growing franchise."

Ashes of Coronation Street cat for sale
15 July 2010
By Paul Robinson
yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk

He prowled his way into TV soap folklore with a starring role in the opening credits of Coronation Street.
Now, in a twist worthy of Corrie itself, Frisky the cat has returned to the spotlight 10 years after his death. The tortoiseshell and white tom's ashes are set to go under the hammer at auction, it was revealed today.

Frisky's former owner, John Rimington, 66, of Rawdon, Leeds, decided to part with his much-missed pet's remains during a clear-out of memorabilia he amassed as a showbiz journalist and publicist. The ashes and their casket have been stored in the loft of John's home since the cat died aged 14 in 2000. John said: "Frisky was not only a loved family pet, he also captured the heart of the nation. For a serious Coronation Street fan, I'd have thought this would be a piece of nostalgic and unusual memorabilia."

Frisky's telly career began in 1990 after Corrie's producers decided to revamp the show's opening credits. They were keen to include a cat because a ginger tom who had featured in the credits since 1976 had proved popular with viewers. A competition was launched to find the new star, with Frisky eventually being chosen from more than 5,000 entries. The Rimingtons put his subsequent fame to good use, raising thousands of pounds for charity by taking him out to make personal appearances at fetes and galas. Frisky appeared in more than 1,000 episodes of Corrie until the programme's credits were changed again two years after his death.

His ashes are expected to fetch up to £150 at next Thursday's sale at Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Gloucestershire. The auction house's Chris Albury said: "It is certainly one of the quirkiest lots we have had this year, ranking alongside a lock of Jane Austen's hair and one of Napoleon's teeth."

Bet Lynch - Vera Duckworth

Hilda Ogden - Jack Duckworth

Fred Elliot - Deirdre Barlow
Coronation Street fancy-dress costumes

Confused Only one of them is a current character - and she's featured as she was in about the mid 90s! Actually, Jack Duckworth is still in the show, but I think the clothes he has are from when he and Vera ran the Rovers...

Flurry of titles mark Corrie's golden age
22.07.10 |
Victoria Gallagher

The cobbles of Coronation Street turn 50 in December, and to commemorate the golden age of Wetherfield many titles related to the soap will be hitting the shelves. Headline will be releasing an official title promising to be the "definitive book on five decades of life on the street". The book will include profiles of 50 "Coronation Street" characters—from Ena Sharples to David Platt—along with interviews with present personalities and extracts from the script. Fifty Years of Coronation Street by Tim Randall will be published as a £20 hardback on 14th October.

Carlton Books will be publishing Coronation Street Treasures containing removable memorabilia, from birth certificates and wedding invitations to birthday cards and prison visiting orders. The boxed set title by Tim Randall will include a CD featuring show highlights and will be published on 14th October priced £30. Carlton will also publish Coronation Street: The Complete Saga as a £14.99 paperback on 14th October.

A new title from Summersdale means fans of Wetherfield will be able to test their knowledge. The Ultimate Unofficial Coronation Street Quiz Book by Ed Cobham will be published as a £5.99 paperback on 4th October. Jennifer Barclay, editorial and rights director at Summersdale, said the publisher wanted to do a book to tie into the anniversary. She added: "We knew there would be official tie-in books, and we wondered what we could do that would be different. Well, possibly the only evening pastime more popular these days than 'Coro' is the pub quiz, so we combined the two elements and came up with a quiz book for fans, and couldn't believe no one had done it before . . . We're hoping many a Christmas afternoon will be spent sitting around quizzing friends and family about The Rovers and the factory."

Other titles on the soap include Coronation Street: BFI TV Classics by Andy Medhurst (British Film Institute) to be published as a £12 paperback on 30th November; Official ITV Coronation Street Annual 2011 (Grange Communications) to be published as a £7.99 hardback on 1st October and 50 Years of Coronation Street: The (Very) Unofficial Story (J R Books) to be published as an £18.99 hardback on 25th September.
