UK: Israel acts completely unacceptable
British Prime Minister David Cameron has condemned Israel for attacking a humanitarian aid convoy in international waters and turning Gaza into a 'prison camp.'
"The situation in Gaza has to change," Cameron said on Tuesday during a joint press conference with Turkey's Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
Israeli has kept the 1.5 million residents of the Gaza Strip under a strict blockade for over three years and has refused the entry of food, medicine, fuel and other essential supplies into the coastal territory.
"Humanitarian goods and people must flow in both directions. Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp," the British premier said.
Cameron criticized the Israeli attack on Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla in May which killed at least nine activists and left dozens of others injured.
"The Israeli attack on the Gaza flotilla was completely unacceptable. And I have told [Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu we will expect the Israeli inquiry to be swift, transparent and rigorous."
The British prime minister also expressed support for Turkey's bid for EU membership, vowing to "pave the road from Ankara to Brussels," The Daily Mail reported.
"When I think about what Turkey has done to defend Europe as a NATO ally, and what Turkey is doing today in Afghanistan alongside our European allies, it makes me angry that your progress towards EU membership can be frustrated in the way it has been," Cameron said.
Although trade between the UK and Turkey has fallen within the last year, while it has increased with France, Cameron pledged to remain Turkey's "strongest possible advocate for EU membership" and urged Turkey to "push forward aggressively" with EU reforms, AFP reported.
