The beard and the wonderful: By DANIEL COUGHLIN
1st September 2007
Weird beards and flash 'taches were on proud display in the event where everybody prefers whiskers... Scores of fuzzy-faced men from across the globe descended on Brighton for the biennial World Beard and Moustache Championships, competing for gold in such categories as best Dali beard, Sideburns Freestyle and best Garibaldi beard.
Organiser Steve Parsons said: "Freestyle beard is probably the most spectacular category because you can do anything you like. There has been a great range of beards and moustaches this year, from short and spiky to long and twirly. Most competitors swear by hairspray to mould their facial hair into the shape they want. At the last championships in Berlin, one competitor styled his beard in the shape of the Brandenburg Gate, complete with horses and flags."
The event was hosted by the Handlebar Club - founded 60 years ago by generously moustached comedian Jimmy Edwards - and each participant entered the arena to the club anthem, which includes the line: "Every girl loves a geezer with a bush on his mush." But the day was not without controversy, as the purist Beard Liberation Front had called for a boycott, saying facial hair should never be styled.

Moustache rage man has close shave Friday, October 12, 2007
A man with a mighty, ten-inch, dandyish moustache has promised a court that he will shave it off, after pleading guilty to assaulting a boy who teased him about it. Charles Law kicked the 13-year-old after he, and a group of other boys, taunted Law over his facial hair.
'Nice moustache. Where'd you get it?' the boy is said to have asked.
The judge ordered Law to pay £75 to each of the three boys in the group, after hearing Law's pledge to shave the moustache off in the hope of avoiding any further moustache-related violence. Law said of his moustache: 'It's a shame, but it has to go. I've had it since I was 22. It was up to 16 inches once, but I shaved it down a bit. I will miss it.'
This is not the first time Law has been convicted of a moustache-related crime. He has previous convictions for affray and threatening behaviour that were reportedly linked to his handlebar. The court was told that Law had a tendency to over-react. Law also served four years for manslaughter, after stabbing his brother to death 2000.

German world beard champ judged a cut above the rest
16th May 2011
A German man scooped the title of world's best beard on Sunday after impressing competition hosts in Norway with his facial hair featuring a moose and a Norwegian flag.
Hairdresser Elmar Weisser, 47, beat 160 hopefuls from 15 countries to take first prize in the World Beard and Moustache Championship, held this year in Trondheim. Weisser is a veteran of the competition, held every two years, having won several times before. He said his sister helped him with the creation, starting work at 7:00 am. "When my beard isn't styled, it goes down to my waist. It is sort of folded up," he told AFP.
Weisser took the title in 2005 in Berlin with his beard in the form of the landmark Brandenburg Gate, and two years later won in England for his recreation of the Tower Bridge. He did not compete in the 2009 competition in Alaska.
Germany and the United States traditionally dominate the eccentric contest which began in 1990 and has been running regularly since 1995. Moustaches are judged in six categories: natural, English, Dali, Hungarian, imperial and freestyle. Contestants with what is deemed a "partial beard" compete for honours in the natural, Chinese, Imperial, Musketeer, sideburns, and freestyle categories. While those with full beards are divided into the groups natural, natural with styled Moustache, Verdi, Garibaldi and freestyle.
