For the second time in his tangential career politician and campaigner George Galloway has taken a stab at the charts, this time with a spoken-word poem over the top of JT Easy's version of For What It’s Worth, originally by Buffalo Springfield.
Speaking to ITV’s Loose Women, he explained that the song was the ideal choice for the modern world: “We thought it was apposite for this time when nobody’s believing official information, when everyone thinks Big Brother – the Orwellian Big Brother – is looking over your shoulder all the time. It’s basically: Everybody, look what’s going down. It’s asking people to be vigilant about official information. Not to trust everything that is said, but at the same time not to disbelieve everything you hear.”
In an extract from the song, played on the show, George recites: “All around the world, people poured. Women, labour unions, freedom fighters. All in cyberspace. The ability of the people to speak unto the people, To every corner of the Earth and instantaneously, Is going to set the people free, And I for one say Hallelujah.” On releasing music these days, he said: “It’s actually relatively easy now because people can download music very easily, you don’t have to go looking for a record shop to buy music. Here’s hoping!”
Galloway previously entered the charts in February 2007 when the Stop the War Coalition he is a part of released a cover of War by Edwin Starr. The band called themselves the Ugly Rumours, after Tony Blair’s university rock group, and managed to reach number 6 in the midweek charts. Galloway’s contribution was an appearance in the music video as a police officer arresting Tony Blair, but this time round he’s the star. “It’s really worth listening to,” he said. “It’s a good treatment of it.”
