I am thinking along the same lines. We didn't see her face coming out of the water or the slab. Something weird is going on. Maybe he has her locked up somewhere.

It does seem kind of weird, but I did notice that both Denise and the "body" they pulled out of the water had on the same nail polish.... same person? Who knows? I hadn't heard that the actress is leaving the show, but they might not have publicized it because of the storyline.

Who knows? But it's fun to speculate Smile

BBC defends Eastenders’ controversial Christian plot
by Brian Hutt
July 17, 2010,
christiantoday.com

The BBC has been forced to deny that a plot involving a pastor in Eastenders is “anti-Christian”. Lucas Johnson, played by actor Don Gilet, is a Pentecostal pastor with an obsession with Scripture who has already murdered a love rival and is abusive towards his wife.

The BBC admitted it had received complaints from viewers who feel the current storyline is offensive to Christians. In a statement the BBC said Lucas was “certainly not intended to be representative of Christians. He is a very damaged and dangerous individual who has created a twisted version of the Christian 'faith' in his mind to hide behind and to convince himself that his actions are acceptable. As the story unfolds, we will see other characters questioning Lucas' claim to be a Christian.

“As Lucas has become increasingly unhinged, his obsession and reliance on the Bible and the scriptures has become increasingly frantic and desperate. This represents this character's emotional breakdown, and it is very clear that this is absolutely not normal behaviour. In episodes yet to broadcast, we will see the characters Grace, Mercy and Dot - all three of whom are Christians - question and discuss Lucas' frame of mind.”

The Christian Institute said the plot was “anti-Christian”.

The BBC and other terrestrial channels has been accused in recent years of marginalising Christianity and portraying it in a negative light, while the programming for other faiths has been positive. Last year, Christians fought to defend the purely religious character of the popular Thought for the Day slot on Radio 4 when it was suggested by humanists that the BBC open up the programme to non-religious speakers.

At its General Synod in February, the Church of England called upon the BBC not to cut its religious broadcasting and expressed its “deep concern” at the number of hours being given to religious programmes by not only the BBC but all of the terrestrial channels. Synod member and former BBC Radio Cumbria producer Nigel Holmes said that the BBC “seldom” showed worship on TV and that it suffered from a “lack of innovation combined with marginalised scheduling” when it came to religious content.

At Easter, the BBC’s head of religion and ethics, Aaqil Ahmed, admitted that TV programming for Easter 2009 “could have been better” and that the BBC had “listened” to complaints, but defended the number of hours on the BBC dedicated to religious programming.

“This year there are 164 hours of religious programming,” he said. “If you look at the broader broadcasting ecology what’s happening on ITV Channel 5 Channel 4 everyone is turning their backs on religion and the BBC isn’t doing that and the programming goes out on prime time.”

I don't see how they think it's anti-Christian at all.

KILLER PREACHER LUCAS JOHNSON: THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RELIGION
29th July 2010
By Katie Begley and Jennifer Dunkerley
Daily Star

HE’S the EastEnders killer who has divided the nation. And tonight millions of fans will finally see religious nutter Lucas Johnson’s world come crashing down as his murderous antics catch up with him. Lucas, who has been dubbed the “preacher of death”, has already bumped off two people, his ex Trina and his wife’s former lover Owen. And let’s not forget his poor dog Sugar, who also came to a grisly end.

That was nothing compared to the shock discovery this week that he had faked his wife’s death. While Walford mourned Denise’s passing, we discovered the shocking truth that the madman had not actually killed her. Instead he locked her in a basement after confessing his deadly secret life to her. Tonight Denise, played by Diane Parish, 40, is finally reunited with her family after escaping. But while Lucas’s killing spree may be over it has been one of the most controversial plot lines of the year.

Hundreds of religious viewers complained to the BBC that the storyline was offensive to Christians. Don Gilet, who plays Lucas, has hit back claiming the story has nothing to do with religion. “It’s not promoting or demoting Christianity, this guy is just not very well,” the 42-year-old tells us. “I know a few people are upset by it, but if you actually watch the show and invest in the story it’s not about religion. It’s about one man’s warped view of life and he could have chosen any view to soak his madness into.”

Nevertheless, the actor has had to put up with abuse in the street from angry fans. The mild-mannered star laughs: “I only go out early or late at night to avoid all the people shouting murderer at me. People shout at me in the supermarket and then run into the next aisle. Strangely, I seem to get recognised most in Asda. "One man asked to take a photo of me at the checkout – he didn’t want to be in the picture, he just wanted a shot of me unloading my shopping, which was weird. But luckily they know it’s all pretend – at least I hope they do.”

So why has his alter ego, who preaches about the goodwill of God, been killing with his bare hands? “He’s got a desperate need to be loved,” says Don with so much conviction we almost believe him. “He always thinks he’s doing the right thing. People come to him for advice, he does seminars, kids come to him, he runs the community centre. He wants to be elevated and loved, but he’s taken a very warped route. It’s been a quality role. I couldn’t have paid for a better part.”

The chemistry between him and co-star Diane is sure to help the soap notch up a few awards this year and Don says she’s been a dream to work with. He adds: “Diane and I have been friends for a while. We worked on a number of other projects together. I’ve always said it’s rare to work with someone when you have that kind of rapport. So I feel very blessed that they put us together.”

Don joined the hit soap in 2008, as the father of beautician/barmaid Chelsea Fox. Lucas was a former drug addict who had walked out on her and mum Denise when she was a baby. “But Lucas couldn’t hide his bad side for long,” he laughs.

And while Don may be at the top of his game now in one of the most talked-about story lines of the year, he was ready to quit acting for good just two years ago. Brought up in Walsall with his two older sisters, he trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. As a jobbing actor he appeared in episodes of Babyfather, Silent Witness, Casualty and Holby City. But prior to his EastEnders audition, Don had been out of work for six months and was terrified he wouldn’t be able to provide for his girlfriend and their two-year-old son Flynn.

He was about to look for a “proper” job when he won the part of Lucas. Don says: “Money was really tight and I was seriously thinking about jacking acting in. This is a precarious business, it’s either feast or famine. I have a mortgage and a baby to look after so I was really worried.” His partner is actress Tracy Whitwell, whom he met while playing Det Sgt Nicky Cole in 55 Degrees North. He was undercover, naked and covered in baby oil, while she played a prostitute. But Don admits he is recognised far more frequently for his EastEnders antics. “People couldn’t remember my name or what they’d seen me in before. Now they are all over me.”

The sensational story comes to an end tonight but Don hints that Lucas could make an unwelcome return in the future. “We don’t know what’s going to happen to him,” he smiles. “He may turn up some time down the line.” Meanwhile, Don is looking for a bit of light relief. He explains: “I’m just going to go out in the world and see who wants to employ me. Maybe I could do a comedy next, who knows?”

--------------------

I remember him in a comedy cop show from about 10 years ago and he was pretty funny in that.

World of lather
It's murder in the soaps this month for both Lucas in EastEnders, and John/Colin in Corrie. It's enough to make you turn to drink: just don't venture into Emmerdale's Woolpack …
Grace Dent
The Guardian,
31 July 2010

"Don't gimme all that chat, PREACHERMAN!" shouted EastEnders' Auntie Kim to godly serial killer Lucas, with such ire her "dead" sister Denise, locked in a cellar next door, could feel the shudders. Hallelujah for Auntie Kim! During his hokey, mix-and-match bible lessons Lucas claimed that God was his only judge, but he'd clearly overlooked the mighty wrath of Kim, who is a tiny, pleather minidress-clad powerhouse of righteous smite, with statement hair and acrylic tips.

Lucas's reign of evil began to wane the moment Kim showed up making a noise like the "Holocaust section" at a My Bloody Valentine concert. "I gotta keep the memory of my D strong!" Kim vowed, dispensing Super Noodles and cuddles to Libby and Chelsea, driving Patrick so berserk he attempted to evict everyone in his house. (Everyone ignored him.) Meanwhile, Lucas sweated and fretted, deeply regretting not keeping his death count to a manageable one, instead of this bewildering three. But that's the problem with murder, it's very moreish. It's like opening a packet of Mint Viscounts: you can't just stop at one.

I stuck closely with the Lucas plot, hoping he'd kill Chelsea with some Acme device, like a giant egg slicer or a freefalling piano. No joy. Chelsea's character is so one-tone, narcissistic and terribly acted the public are actually fonder of Ian Beale. This is just as well as Beale can never ever be let go from EastEnders as his redundancy pay would be so majestic the licence fee would need raising to £321 per household. The Beale Tax option is only ever mooted in frightenened whispers in BBC bunkers and certainly never near a general election. Sadly, Lucas didn't kill Chelsea, and neither did Elstree take up my script suggestion of Lucas pushing Libby's vile sex-pest bloke Adam at hurtling, breakneck speeds into a vat of boiling lemon curd. Thankfully, Libby has just dumped Adam, but now she's in dire need of a friend more than ever with her mum being "back from the grave". If only Darren wasn't madly in love with that simpering upright Vileda Supermop Jodie and engrossed in getting her to accept the fact he's not Jewish and therefore has a foreskin. "I just want to know I'm normal, 'ere have a look?" Daz asked Max, standing with his pants round his ankles. Daz has clearly seen Max pawing so many Walford women's boobs he thinks his friend is an NHS specialist.

In other news, Ronnie Mitchell has revealed that Archie was abusing her for years as a child. Blimey, Archie was a busy villain when he was alive. He is the onion of evil: so many layers of badness and every one makes the Walford women weep. I'm waiting for the Vatican to admit he spent the 80s frotting choirboys in Mönchengladbach, before heading to Seville to throw turkeys off church spires.
