Rip Torn charged with breaking into US bank
Sophie Tedmanson
31st January 2010

The American actor Elmore “Rip” Torn has been charged with allegedly breaking into a Connecticut bank and carrying a loaded handgun while intoxicated. Torn, 78, was arrested on Friday night after police found him inside the Litchfield Bancorp with a loaded revolver. The Men in Black actor was taken into custody and booked on charges including burglary and possession of a firearm without a permit. He is being held on a $100,000 (£63,000) bond and is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

According to a police report published on the celebrity website tmz.com, Torn used “forced entry” to get inside the bank and was “highly intoxicated” when he was found by police. Mark Macomber, the CEO of the bank in Connecticut, told TMZ that no one was in the building at the time Torn allegedly broke in. Mr Macomber said the police found Torn lying on the floor. He added that the authorities believe Torn thought he was in his own home.

Last year, Torn was given probation in a drunken driving case in Connecticut and granted permission to enter an alcohol education programme. He has two previous drunken driving arrests in New York. A spokesman for Torn did not return phone calls yesterday.

Torn was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for his role in the drama Cross Creek in 1984. He won an Emmy in 1996 for his guest appearance on the Larry Sanders Show and was recently nominated for an Emmy for an appearance in the US comedy 30 Rock.
