Help ! I think I’m going through a mini GG crisis; I have been really bothered lately, about what many may think is quite a trivial matter, and they may well be right, but this nagging concern just won’t go away. It’s to do with GG now seeming to plug & promote gambling on his TalkSport show; it’s not that I have any particular issue with gambling itself, but I distinctly recall many occasions in his older shows where he explicitly stated that, just like he did not drink alcohol, he did not himself, nor did he approve of others gambling, and he made quite a big thing of it especially during the debates about the “Supercasinos” that New Labour were encouraging. However recently he has started to gradually promote gambling, mainly with many references to “Fred the Booker”, and last week he even stated that he does & has gambled, with the piss-poor excuse that it’s not really gambling because he only bets on “political things” that he “knows a lot about”.

Ok no big deal many may think, it just proves that he’s a normal person with little inconsistencies like everybody else, not so important in light of the heroic work he does; to which I can only agree, but I'm still bugged with annoying wondering thoughts such as, has he either voluntary or otherwise been “persuaded” to promote gambling at Talksport ? Or has he changed his position on the issues, or was he being extremely disingenuous to the point of lying when he stated that he personally opposed to all forms of gambling ?

Am I being silly with this issue ?

Also having watched the odious Jack Straw on QT last night, and hearing him rather proudly state that he is off Jewish descent on his Mother’s side, I was reminded of the time that GG got very angry & cut-off a Caller who had referred to Straw as being Jewish. Maybe GG isn’t as clued up as he thinks he is on all things political afterall?

Yes I could do email/call his show, although being a long time admirer of his, I would hate that my first message (if taken) would be a critical one; besides can he really say on air if he’s been forced by TalkSport, or that he has changed his mind so drastically on a previous point of his own self-declared Christian principles, or that he was actually lying previously ?!

My hunch would be that he has been told that he has to now promote gambling, and that although it’s against his wishes, he does it because the show is too important to give up. Exactly like why he used to force himself through gritted teeth to promote those "Low Price" auction/competitions.

I was wondering about the gambling myself - he spoke quite clearly about having bet on a horse last week, which really was a surprise.

Yes exactly, lately there has been quite a few bizarrely out of context plugs for betting, so deliberately crafted & intended to appear as spontaneous comments, but instead clearly standing out a mile, in my mind anyway, as being deliberate plugs.

Plugs for betting sites or book makers or for gambling per se?

No specific Book Makers or Sites, unless "Fred the Bookie" is one ! Just a recent & strange sudden influx of general betting comments & remarks !

Well not even the slightest hint of a gambling reference last night, almost as if GG had paid a visit to this Forum just before the show ! Surprised

Anyhow I've looked-up the often mentioned (last few shows anyway) "Fred the Bookie" and he is a rather well-known Bookmaker; here's a report on him during a particularly eventful day for him;

I'm not sure what I think about gambling. I do myself occasionally and I'm the type least likely to become addicted (despite my form elsewhere) as I get so affronted when I lose I don't bet again for six months.... I do very occasionally get a 'sure thing' tip and have made a couple of £50 bets which for me is a big gamble! On the three times this has happened they have won.

I also think that there is risk in a lot of what we do... we gamble on what we think is the most probable outcome in all areas of our lives.

Business is one area where I guess each venture is a gamble and then you have the side of the banking system that has speculation at its heart. This speculation often with the resources of others and especially when it involves short selling I dislike.

I think there is a debate along the lines of is making a profit without putting in any effort immoral? That would cover gambling, speculation and money lending.

That’s a bit of a deep & interesting Post; there’s no doubt that taking risks is a fundamental part of Life in many various aspects, but taking risks for monetary gain is singled out as bad by various religions, and I guess that this is due to greed being it’s inevitable natural by-product, and on the other side, the other negative potential effect of gambling is to make people destitute.

I personally don’t gamble, not through any principle; but on the practical grounds that I have very little money that I can afford to lose !

Micky, I edited your post because of the quoting - if a post has more than 100 characters quoted it messes up the front page...

No problem; is there a way of quoting just a selection of a Post rather than have the full Post quoted ?

yeah, but you have to edit it yourself when you're typing your reply... remove everything from between the
blah blah blah
brackets that you don't want to quote.

...which is the very best reason not to gamble I agree! Although I occasionally when down to my last £10 or £5 will bet with it in all or nothing type escapade! I figure that a few days with £5 is no different to a few days with £0.

I also agree with your thoughts about greed and do find people who make a living from speculating with hoarded wealth distasteful... I wonder though that if I was endowed more significantly in the wealth department that I might grow accustomed to doing the same myself!
