ITV gamble on Coronation Street
9/07/2009

ITV will roll the dice in a high-stakes gamble when it switches Corrie from Wednesday to Thursday nights. The channel is losing viewers and advertisers so needs to be bold to revive falling fortunes.

But Corrie is a national institution, a flagship soap much-loved by the nation's viewers. To move a mid-week fixture of the past half-century to accommodate football may work. If it doesn't, ITV must immediately rewrite the latest script.

-------------------

Considering they've decided to cancel The Bill, this probably makes sense.

"The Bill" is canceled? Dang! I never watched it, but still. How long did that show air?

Where will all of the former soap actors go after leaving Corrie or EE? Razz

There is 'Doctors' which is a daytime soap that's on every day, so I'm sure they won't starve! There's also 'River City' which is only shown in Scotland - they occasionally have foreigners in the cast.... haha

And, after all that, it seems The Bill isn't going anywhere just yet.

Coronation Street moving to Thursdays
Thursday 9th July 2009

ITV bosses are moving Coronation Street to prevent it from clashing with Champion's League matches. The soap will make way for football following a deal struck by ITV to screen games in the European competition on Wednesdays. In previous seasons, ITV has screened Champion's League football on Tuesdays.

The move is the first time Coronation Street - which celebrates 50 years next year - has been given a regular Thursday slot. Emmerdale will also be affected with the Tuesday hour-long edition cut to 30 minutes and two separate episodes on Thursdays. The Bill will move to a 9pm start on Thursdays.

ITV also wants to screen FA Cup replays and England internationals on Wednesdays. An ITV spokesman said: "The volume of both soaps will remain the same, with 180 minutes of Emmerdale stripped across the week and 150 minutes of Coronation Street."
