A former Big Brother contestant sent for trial for stealing a policeman's baton at an anti-war demonstration has walked free after the case was dropped. Carole Vincent, 55, who appeared on the reality TV show in 2007, had denied committing the offence on June 15, 2008. The case was dropped when the prosecution offered no evidence against her at London's Southwark Crown Court.
Vincent, of Leytonstone, east London, dressed in a black jacket decorated with anti-war badges, said afterwards: "Common sense has prevailed, we have a right to protest. We won't be silenced." Veteran Labour politician Tony Benn, who was in court as a witness for Vincent, welcomed the decision. He said: "It would have been a gross injustice if she had been sentenced."
Vincent said she was arrested after picking up a baton dropped by a police officer at the Parliament Square demonstration. The prosecution had accused her of theft. Vincent said she was not expecting Monday's result as she had been told there would be a trial that would last about five days.
Mr Benn said he, politician George Galloway and octogenarian campaigner Walter Wolfgang had all been near Vincent when the incident occurred and had offered to make a statement when he heard she had been charged.

As she was brought on stage, she was compared to the car she was about to unveil - 'slick, stylish and attractive'. But former Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton certainly failed to live up to her slick and stylish credentials, because moments later she was flat on her face in front of a room full of people.
Michelle suffered her spectacularly embarrassing tumble on the final of Ireland's version of The Apprentice.
Celebrity Big Brother 2010 LogoCelebrity Big Brother 2010 LogoBig Brother will be watching celebrities for the final time this January. And his eye is all a-flame.
The new logo for the final series of Celebrity Big Brother has been revealed and it’s devilishly good. The infamous BB eyeball has been turned into licking orange flames as this year Big Brother plays the Devil.
Show bosses have called the series Hell Lies In Others and executive producer Shirley Jones promised: "This is no holiday camp for pampered personalities; Celebrity Big Brother won't be leaving the limelight quietly". Oooooh.
We reckon celebrities are going to have to play against each other to win privileges which could make for fiery viewing. Maybe there’s even a crime and punishment theme? Boy George would feel right at home.
Wow, great site - thanks for the post, Face! I'm still holding out hopes for Adam Ant to appear on the show (remember that rumour from a while back that he might appear?)!!! Really looking forward to it now!
It would be worth seeing if he does go in for sure - but I reckon he'd last about 3 days before losing it... haha
I heard today that Boy George definitely won't be going in as the probation service have blocked his request. Typical jobsworths - it's not as if they wouldn't know where he is and what he's up to is it?!
