'Popsicle' Corpse Left For Days
January 30, 2009
A frozen corpse was left lying in an abandoned US warehouse for two days after being discovered, despite three calls to police, it has emerged. A journalist from Detroit, Charlie LeDuff, said he raised the alarm after receiving an anonymous call from a man who said his friend had discovered a body in a disused lift shaft.
"He's encased in ice, except his legs, which are sticking out like Popsicle sticks," the caller told Mr LeDuff. The reporter went to investigate, and discovered the two denim clad limbs of a man poking up through a block of ice inside the frozen building. He made an emergency call and was assured the body would be recovered.
However, the next day, the journalist said the body remained trapped in the ice. The journalist said he then made two more 911 calls, one of which was disconnected, before a fire department employee arranged a meeting to recover the body. The man who initially made the shocking find had reportedly been playing hockey with a group of friends in the building's frozen basement. After making the gruesome discovery, they continued their game without reporting the incident.
Detroit, once known as the US 'murder capital' struggles with a high crime rate, made worse by the record unemployment and home foreclosures the recession has brought. "When you hear somebody say it's a dead body near a train station, you say 'and?'" local resident Bianca Glenn said. The cause of the man's death or when he died is not yet known, but one theory is that he was overcome by the freezing temperatures after suffering a fall in the building.

God rest his soul. And may God have mercy on our society, rotting right before our eyes. So shameful. |

Italian prisoner fined for pillowcase damage in suicide attempt
ROME, February 2 (RIA Novosti) - An Italian court has ordered a Kurdish prisoner pay 25 euros ($32) for damaging pillowcases during a suicide attempt, local media said on Monday. The Il Piccolo newspaper quoted the judge as saying the prisoner at the jail in the northern Italian city of Trieste had "knowingly attempted to damage state administration property" by tearing up two pillowcases which he intended to later use as a noose to hang himself.
The guards managed however to prevent the man from hanging himself and he was later released from prison and granted political asylum. However, before leaving prison, he was made to pay seven euros.
Meanwhile, the Italian court later fined the man 30 euros, the newspaper said. The man's lawyer appealed to the court against the ruling requesting that his mental condition be taken into consideration. The fine was reduced to 25 euros.
