Findus today went into liquidation - meaning 400 jobs at risk and the disappearance of 3 yr old Crispy Pancakes from our local newsagents freezer! It's clear that British culture cannot survive without such culinary stalwarts - we're all dooomed.

Findus Crispy Pancakes make a comeback with a new filling... lobster thermidor

They were as much a taste of the 70s as the Vesta curry and Bird's Angel Delight.

But even food nostalgics would have to admit that Findus Crispy Pancakes were hardly haute cuisine.

Thanks to a makeover inspired by a celebrity chef, all that is about to change.

The three original varieties - Minced Beef, Three Cheeses and Chicken, Bacon and Sweetcorn - are being augmented by three upmarket flavours.

It was after Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall rustled up his own smoked haddock crispy pancakes on his Channel 4 River Cottage show that Findus bosses decided to spice up the range.

After much thought and experimentation they came up with their new flavours: Lobster Thermidor, with shallots, bechamel sauce and parmesan, Moroccan Lamb Tagine, with cayenne pepper, apricots and sultanas, and Roasted Butternut Squash and Goats Cheese.

Two months ago crispy pancakes were voted the nation's number one retro food after sales rocketed in the supermarkets.

They polled three times more votes than nearest rivals Wagon Wheels and Fab ice lollies.

Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall, 44, revealed that he was hooked on them when he was a boy.

'My all-time heroes were Captain Birds Eye and Mr Findus,' he said.

'I loved absolutely nothing more than Findus Crispy Pancakes and fish fingers.'

A Findus spokesman said: 'After seeing Hugh recreate the original Findus Crispy Pancake recipes on his TV show, we thought it only right that we develop a gourmet range.'
