President of General Assembly censures U.S. blockade of Cuba

The president of the UN General Assembly, Nicaraguan Miguel d’Escoto, said today that the economic blockade of Cuba imposed by the United States is an expression of Washington’s "sick obsession" with Cuba.

"The U.S. government simply cannot tolerate the existence of a place like Cuba, which rises up like a heroine of solidarity and a champion of the values that the world needs for the survival of the human species," D’Escoto said.

The veteran Nicaraguan diplomat, politician and priest made that statement the day before the annual vote in the General Assembly on a resolution against the economic blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for almost 50 years.

Last year, a similar resolution received almost unanimous support — 184 out of 192 members who voted in favor of the U.S. government ending that coercive measure against the Caribbean nation.

For this year’s vote on the resolution, which takes place today, Wednesday, October 29, overwhelming support is again expected in the highest body of the United Nations. However, D’Escoto said that "on a number of occasions, I have wondered what the Assembly is good for when votes passed by an overwhelming majority and which reflect the wishes of 95% of the UN’s members are utterly ignored."

The Nicaraguan diplomat said that one of the issues on the Assembly’s agenda is about the universal clamor for more than 15 years to strengthen the General Assembly as part of the UN reform process.

UN votes for lifting of Cuban sanctions (for the 17th year running)

The UN General Assembly has passed a resolution demanding that Washington lifts its embargo on Cuba. The resolution was passed by an overwhelming majority, with 185 countries in favour and only three against (the United States, Israel and the Marshall Islands). There were two abstentions.

Havana says the blockade has cost it $100 billion over half a century.

Cuba is desperate for money to help it recover from the effects of August's Hurricane Gustav.

Each year for the past 17 years the UN has voted in favour of a resolution calling on the U.S. to lift its crippling embargo on Cuba. But each time Washington has ignored the wishes of the United Nations and continued to isolate the communist island state through sanctions and travel bans.

The Castro government has been faced with the blockade since 1962. It primarily targeted the communist regime, but affected food, clean water, medicine and other economic needs of the population.

Authorities in Cuba say the sanctions have undermined the country's economic health, but are not hopeful the new resolution will bring about any change.

I wonder why Israel voted in favour of America? It makes them look pathetic and they're usually pretty clear about how big and tough they are.

whats surprised me is that britain wasn't one of the two abstentions! maybe that was one of the concessions on cuba that brown had to give to labour when he was buying back benchers support on that 42 days bill!

there seems to be some confusion between sources as to who the two abstentions were; its two of either micronesia, palau or the marshall islands, with one of them voting against. its them three that always vote along with america against un resolutions against israel! what sort of hold does america have over those three places?!

I believe that Israel votes with America because America need additional support so their goverment dont look like what they are - The lone bully.

I believe Noam Chomsky speaks of this phenomenon.
