Newlyweds banned from every pub on their island after reception rumpus
Jul 13 2008
By Steve Dinneen

A NEWLYWED couple have been banned from hundreds of pubs and hotels after their wedding turned into a drunken farce. Alan and Nicola Hudson are accused of being at the centre of a punch-up in the hotel they booked for their wedding night. And it is claimed that after they were kicked out, they turned up at a posher hotel nearby and nicked another newlywed couple's suite - along with the bride's nightie.

Now fisherman Alan - nicknamed Spuddy - and his new wife have been hit with a ban from all the licensed premises in the Western Isles. Guests had gathered to toast the couple at a reception in Stornoway Sea Angling Club after their marriage at the town hall. But trouble flared when they were joined by guests at the two star Caladh Inn, where they had booked their wedding night. Witnesses said punches were thrown as the Hudsons' guests clashed with another wedding party and the bride ended up in the thick of it.

A hotel source said: "The bride didn't start the trouble. There seemed to be friction between other guests. It was absolute chaos when the fight broke out." The couple were ordered to leave then turned up at the fourstar Caberfeidh Hotel - owned by the same chain - and said they had booked the bridal suite. Staff led Nicola, 34, and Spuddy, 36, to the room, which was filled with gifts for another couple married that day. The rightful occupants, who were still at their reception, had to go to the Caladh for their wedding night. Sources claim the Hudsons locked themselves in the suite and slipped out the following morning.

Yesterday, Nicola denied there had been trouble at her wedding - and claimed she had not been near the Caladh Inn. She said: "Whoever is spreading these lies is pure evil - my wedding went without a hitch. There was a bit of a mix-up with the rooms but that was the hotel porter's fault, not ours. "We didn't go to the Caladh." Spuddy said: "We're considering leaving the island over this."

Aspokesman for the hotels said: "There were incidents at both hotels. There may still be a police investigation." Moray Weir, of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, said: "At the request of the Cala Hotel group we ordered a ban from licensed premises in the Western Isles for Nicola and Alan Hudson following a disturbance at the Caladh Inn."

The couple who lost their bridal suite, James and Jolene Macleod, said champagne and gifts for their baby went missing from their room. James said: "I saw the funny side when we arrived - the porter was apologetic and it was obviously a mixup. But when I discovered that gifts for the baby had gone I was really angry. Even Jolene's nightie that her pals had bought for her was missing."

Banned from every licensed premises in the Western Isles? I doubt that could happen without a court case, but it's funny and mad all the same...
