John Cleese has recorded a football song called Don?t Mention The World Cup. The 66-year-old comic, whose Fawlty Towers ?don?t mention the war? line has been purloined by many a newspaper covering the tournament in Germany, has released the track under the name The First Eleven. He said: ?It's a catchy tune, and hopefully you'll be hearing it on a football terrace near you, very soon. Come on England!?

The song ? which is available on iTunes ? has been created with Dean Whitbread, who helps Cleese with his podcasts, and co-writer Ashley Slater. Cleese has already been enlisted by the German embassy in London to back a World Cup essay writing contest for youngsters with the title: But Don't Mention The War.

Meanwhile, Frank Skinner and David Baddiel?s Three Lions anthem will be rereleased on June 5. The track is the same version as used for the 1998 World Cup, and has not been rerecorded for the new tournament. It comes out on the same day that Embrace release the official England World Cup song, World At Your Feet.

Having heard the track by Embrace I can only think that Cleese's effort has to be far superior!

Here's a direct link to Three Lions - the song I reckon wins hands down in the all-time Football Themes stakes!

I'm going to check out the John Cleese song.... should be good.

I remember there was a song that the German team did many years ago, like back in the 70's that was quite good but i can't remember the title for the life of me..... I'll have to see if my father has it.
