Dunkin' Donuts dump Rachael Ray 'terror scarf' ad
The Daily Telegraph (Au)
May 29, 2008 09:15am

THE Dunkin' Donuts chain has pulled an online advertisement featuring celebrity chef Rachael Ray after critics argued that that a scarf she wore in the ad offers symbolic support for terrorism. Dunkin' Donuts said it pulled the ad over the weekend because of what it calls a "misperception'' about the scarf that detracted from its original intent to promote its iced coffee.

Critics, including conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, complained that the scarf appeared to be traditional garb worn by Arab men. One of America's most popular celebrity chefs and a widely published author, Ray is also a frequent guest on Oprah Winfrey's talk show, as well as hosting her own television series. The ad's critics say such scarves have come to symbolise Muslim extremism and terrorism.

Canton, Massacusetts-based Dunkin' Donuts says the black-and-white scarf that Ray wore had a paisley design, and was selected by a stylist for the advertising shoot. The chain says no symbolism was intended.

Scarves are the harbingers of doom! What a fucking idiotic complaint.

Does anyone know what building that is in the background of the photo?

I can't place the building, but I'll look around a bit longer.

It shouldn't be too surprising that a corporation would bow to (right-wing) pressure to protect profits. One especially disgusting quote I saw in relation to this story:

Quote:
The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.

It looks like it's the Oregon Capitol Building...

nice one Major, that looks the place. The reason I was wondering was because things that are in the background like that tend to be more subliminal in their effect. Knowing that it's an important government building is probably relevant... somehow or other!

I own one that looks that. I got it when we lived in Saudi Arabia (I also have a completely white one)...guess I am a terrorist. I don't really go to Dunkin Donuts, even though the coffee is good because donuts are a danger food for me....it is dangerous for me to even be NEAR them. But if I ever get that under control, I think I'll be buying them from somewhere else. I don't have time to deal with stupidity and pulling that add was just stupidity, plain and simple.

That was dumber than dumb, and to think that one person in the media complained and they took the ad off.....Strange that it didn't take much for them to do that. I never would have thought in a million years that the scarf resembled "terrorism".

its kinda scary really, that the current climate in america is at such a point where this can happen and everyone involved just didn't say, hang on, a scarf has fuck all to do with terrorism!

i used to wonder how the nazis has managed to get the population to such a state of fear that the nazi's could get away with what they did, i never understood it, but observing america and here since 9/11 - i can see how it happens Sad

I don't think you can compare what happened with the Nazi's and America the same thing Luke. Also, it's only a few loudmouths that our complaining, and quite frankly...until this article above, I've not heard about it. I don't think Dunkin' Donuts had any real pressure to pull the ad, but I guess they were frightened of any kind of bad publicity. I'm not really sure as to why they were so compelled to pull the ad over very minority over the critics. You get wacky talking heads in all parts of the political arena. The right has Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin and the left have Keith Olbermann and Arianna Huffington just to name a couple. It doesn't speak for a large company. I just think there is a lot of wide "paint brushing" going on over such non news items as the above. Just my 2 cents. ;-)

This disgusts me even more because it is clearly not a Palestinian scarf. It's just a white and black (or possibly white and chocolate) weave with what looks like a flower pattern.

It looks nothing like a genuine Arafat scarf, which I've been meaning to buy for a while now but never got around to. I think I'll be ordering my genuine PLO scarf tomorrow, because unlike Rachael Ray, I am one of those "terrorists", by which I mean supporter of Palestine. Ahem.

These Right-wing idiots scream bloody murder at anything. I bet genuine and decent conservatives like John Leboutillier are ashamed of these hysterical bullies.

don't get me wrong pirty, i'm not comparing the actions of the nazis with that of the american or british government ( i'll save that for another thread wink ) , more the mindset of the people, the culture of fear in society. hitler didn't go to the german people and say we're going to invade this country and that, he said we're going to protect you from this and that - it was the fear that was generated that enabled them to convince the german people. that theres anyone anywhere that can look at that advert and come up with a connection to terrorism and isn't laughed at by everyone i find worrying. i mean, its ridiculous, but it was taken seriously. its that culture of irrationality, of fear, seeing the bogeyman everywhere - thats what i'm trying to get at ( in a probably not a very clear way! )

I'm also worried that people could look at the advert and think that if they eat at Dunkin' Donuts they might get to look like the model.

They just might.... she's actually kind of chubby (which is fine by me) and she's a cook that has her own tv show in the US. Smile She doesn't look quite right in the picture.... I think they've stretched her a bit or something.

I love her cooking, can't stand her show. She irritates the hell out of me. But the meals she makes look great. However, it is very obvious that Anthony Bourdain can't stand her in any way! Laughing
