The few stories I've read or watched seem to go out of the way to say it's the most recent attack in Israel. But I'm pretty sure that most countries don't recognize (officially, at least) Jerusalem as being part of Israel. |
That's one of the contradictions in the story. We are told the attack happened in Israel since it happened in Jerusalem (paraphrasing : the "united and perpetual capital of Israel"), but the attacker wasn't Israeli despite him being a resident of Jerusalem (and probably born and grown up there).
You are right most countries rightly don't recognise it as the capital of Israeli, and at the v. least East Jerusalem is on the other side of the 1967 line, so widely recognised by non-zionist supporters as occupied. As for West Jeruslam, since it was captured in the 1948 land grab, is considered by many to be part of Israel.
What the 1948 UN partition map says is another issue completely. And the Israelis have never signed a peace deal or explicitly stated the land it claims as Israeli
(as opposed to captured). Until there is a peace treaty with the Palestinians, this will all remain contested. |
