The stunning image shows London under a blanket of cloud

Canary Wharf looms up from the mist. This stunning image was taken by a Metro reader as he approached Heathrow Airport having jetted in from Argentina.

i wonder if the london eye rose above the mist? that would have been cool! Cool

The London Eye would have looked like one of those abandoned, wooden wheels from a wagon buried in a cowboy town. The modern connotation would have made for a spectacular shot!

That can be either London covered in fog or modern day Regina, Saskatchewan.

Laughing

Stunning shot, though.

Looks faked to me. Too clear to be taken from a plane window - and no other buildings in sight at all? I know the Canary Wharf building is the tallest, but the ones that surround it aren't taller than other tall buildings in the capital surely.

I was bored so I did some research (I have no life Laughing).

It looks perfectly feasible to me - here's the same angle from within Google Earth, with the three differences explained.

I believe I count 7 or 8 buildings in the picture.

According to Wikipedia, 8 of the buildings at Canary Wharf are in the top 28 in London, which means that there should be another 20 or so visible somewhere above the cloudline, though it depends on the direction the camera was facing as to how many of these could be in the scene.

The smallest of the 8 is 104 metres high, and the second list on the same Wiki page indicates a few other structures that are taller, including St. Pauls Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and the London Eye, so they should be visible too.

I still think it looks too cool to be true.

I am with you maycm. It seems a bit unusual for the cloud cover to stop at 100 metres - and there to be complete blue skies above! Pretty awesome looking picture never the less Smile

Now you mention the clear sky, the more I look the more it just looks like a high altitude shot above the cloud tops.

A bit like this one....but with some buildings edited in.

Whole thing looks perfectly ok to me. You are looking from West to East and all the other main London landmarks are West of the Isle of Dogs. Don't forget that Canary Wharf is at least 3 miles from the City of London.
St. Pauls cathedral is too far away to be in that pic, so is Battersea power station. The London eye is a bit closer but I reckon it would still be out of that shot.
And the building with the pyramid roof IS Canary Wharf.

Yea, and my Google Earth picture accounts for all 8. Bat knows his London geography much better than me, all I had was Google Earth, and I account for every building in my pic.

I think it's real.
