Prize-winning animal pictures to drive you wild

Here's a selection of some of the incredible wildlife snaps sent in by 32,000 photographers from 78 countries to the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
Brown bear: This photo, taken by Sergey Gorshkov in East Russia, earned him the title of Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Monkey moment: This photo was taken by Patrick Corning in Costa Rica - overall winner of the ten years and under category
Mesmerised: Meerkats, by Shem Compion, South Africa
This charming stoat was pictured by Ari Tervo, Finland
Double vision: Water vole, by Danny Greens, Derbys
Asian elephant, by Jeff Yonover, US
By Robert Knight: Winner of the Wild Places category

all brilliant, but the first bear pic - thats incredible. i love the wild places one as well, i have a fascination with snow, ice and water - that picture ticks all the boxes |

Gotta wonder if ole' Sergei is still alive after getting (seemingly) that close to a Russian Brown Bear. |

I've just been thinking about that (you could have heard the cogs grinding down the street) and I've come to the conclusion that he had a very high resolution camera and quality zoom. This theory is based on the amount of light from the flash that you can see reflected in the bear and it leads me to guess that he was about 10ft away - just far enough to get the hell out of dodge if it went wrong!
That or the camera was on a tripod and he got it remotely. Which seems far more reasonable eh? All those cogs grinding too... |

It really amazes me what snow and ice can do based on the temp and wind. Being from a warm climate, we really don't get to see anything like this. Cool.... |
