I recently watched the documentary “The US vs Lennon” that GG has mentioned a few times, and my already high regard & respect for the Lennon, increased even further. He was so much regarded as a subversive dissident and dangerous national threat to the US Government, that his calls were bugged & he was frequently followed, often blatantly so as to intimidate him. When that didn’t work, they tried to expel him, which involved a years long legal case that he eventually won. At one point, he was due to headline an anti-war protest contest at the Republican conference, but pulled out after receiving “anonymous” death threats. Why was he regarded as such a threat ? Because he was a high profile celebrity who was against the War in Vietnam. Direct comparisons with the anti-war movements of then & now, are difficult to make, because of different times & factors (such as 9/11 for example), but I’m sure that Lennon would have been a very effective & very vocal critic of all the Bush/Blair/Brown wars; instead he got shot, and we are left with Paul, says it all really !
