MiHD seems to win HANDS DOWN .. since it doesn't give someone an irrevocable license.

Anyone have any experience with mihd ? I did a search for "mihd" on couchtripper, but nothing was found. Unsure if that means search isn't working correctly, or no-one has ever used it.

Aim is for uploaders to be given a URL directly to the file which can be fed straight to a player -- bypassing all delays (as seen on sendspace)

sounds good, I'll need to take a look. anything with a direct link is ideal, though it's not as if you can claim ownership to a file that isn't your copyright in the first place...

edit: I'm just trying a file now and it has just a simple http uploader which means (with Virgin broadband) that my upload speed is limited to about 55k/s... if they made a Java uploader (which would give me 90k/s) I'd use it.

Also, I just tried a download from it and the direct link (which you only get after clicking two links) is only valid for 4 hours, which isn't really much use for purposes here.

but I think you are forced to go via that page before you can click download which is a long URL :

I wonder if this URL changes over time to stop people bypassing the main page. Also, I wonder if you uploaded a file with a media extension (.mp3/.wmv etc) if the above download URL would work in a media player. I know you use a .CTR extension, but was that forced on you (as opposed to keeping original extension unaltered). Seems strange Hymo forces you to choose a "new" extension

Because the company relies on visitors to it in order to make their money (from ads) I'm not up for bypassing them - if they noticed it they'd likely close the account.

The extension problem is just so I can provide individual links to each file, rather than the entire folder

Thanks faceless. I agree that they want to cover their costs via advertising.

Still, I find it strange why hymo forces you to rename files, to say .CTR extension, before enabling individual links. Maybe they are worried people would like to media files directly.

you don't have to rename the files if you add the .ctr extension to the 'open with' list.

I actually quite like the fact that the extension needs changed - it makes the files linked to this site a bit more. At some point in the future I'll make the directory on humyo private and only accesible to people I know, but for the meantime it seems to work very well. Especially so if you download via firefox and the 'down them all' plugin - I got about 650k/s on that file you linked.

FYI, I just begun using Humyo (for photo sharing, instead of using Flickr). I kept the file extension unchanged (i.e. .jpg), and the drop down box does allow sharing/links to individual files. I uploaded them unaltered, thus keeping all the properties.

Flickr Uploader had problems (i.e. upload progress got stuck at 0%) when I sent the photos files unaltered (around 4MB each). Downsizing worked.

Hymyo was also MUCH better at selective sharing .. whilst Flickr grouped all your sharing contacts into just 2 groups : Friends / Family.

About upload speeds, I use Virgin, and when I uploaded to Humyo it used a Java Script .. which did go v. fast (around 90KB/s)

Flickr had it's open upload application. I recall it has a script which errored on large files, and that script was Java.

virgin have speed caps on http upload and download, so that's got a lot to do with it. The main reason I chose humyo was because of their uploader which seems to bypass the Virgin cap.
