TAKING LIBERTIES
The shocking truth about the erosion of our fundamental civil liberties by Tony Blair’s government will be exposed this summer in TAKING LIBERTIES, released on DVD in the UK cinemas by Revolver Entertainment October 15th 2007.
Right to Protest, Right to Freedom of Speech. Right to Privacy. Right not to be detained without charge, Innocent Until Proven Guilty. Prohibition from Torture. TAKING LIBERTIES will reveal how these six central pillars of liberty have been systematically destroyed by New Labour, and the freedoms of the British people stolen from under their noses amidst a climate of fear created by the media and government itself.
TAKING LIBERTIES uncovers the stories the government don’t want you to hear – so ridiculous you will laugh, so ultimately terrifying you will want to take action. Teenage sisters detained for 36 hours for a peaceful protest; an RAF war veteran arrested for wearing an anti-Bush and Blair T-shirt; an innocent man shot in a police raid; and a man held under house arrest for two years, after being found innocent in court. Ordinary law-abiding citizens being punished for exercising their ‘rights’ – rights that have been fought for over centuries, and which seem to have been extinguished in a decade.
Irreverent but revelatory, outrageous but true, TAKING LIBERTIES combines these real stories of liberty loss with never-seen-before footage, cheeky stunts and comment from Mark Thomas, leading politicians, celebrities, human rights organisations, academics and lawyers. Narration from Ashley Jensen (EXTRAS, UGLY BETTY); a pumping soundtrack with tracks by Oasis, Radiohead, Stranglers and Franz Ferdinand; and the presence of Kurt Engfehr, producer of FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE add up to make TAKING LIBERTIES the most explosive and controversial film to hit screens this summer.
hopefully this will turn up on the scene before long... I though about buying it, but £18 (inc p+p) is a bit steep. If they had it for a tenner I'd have got one.
fascist bastards. Noo Labor. I know "fascist" is a well worn out word, but sadly I think it applies here.
Heavy handed police tactics that remind me of the sort of treatment we used to get regularly at the free festivals in the 70's - 80's, now being used on "normal" pensioners. Hard to believe.
Bet you won't see this on main stream telly any time soon.
i thought i'd post this in here as maya's case is in the documentary

Peace activist faces prison for remembering war dead

In the week of remembrance Sunday, peace activists Maya Anne Evans (27)
from St Leonards on Sea, convicted in 2005 for reading the names of
British soldiers killed in the Iraq war opposite Downing Street is now
facing prison for her remembrance ceremony when she attends Horseferry
Road Court 2pm Tuesday to explain why she is refusing to pay the £250
fine.
As the British Legion assemble this Sunday to remember the war dead,
Maya Anne Evans (1) may well be spending a week in prison for reading
the names of Iraqi's and British soldiers killed since the invasion 2003
when she stood opposite the cenotaph two years ago.
An unauthorised vigil will be held at 1pm outside the court on Tuesday,
and a remembrance ceremony will take place at 1.30pm where activists
will remember the 1.2 million Iraqi's and 171 British service people who
have died as a result of the war, according to the law this event is
classified illegal.
Maya Anne Evans says: "This Thursday will be the third anniversary of
the bombing of Fallujah where US troops with the support of the UK
bombed the city using white phosphorus - a substance that burns down
to the bone - as a weapon. A reported 700 bodies were recovered from the
rumble, 550 were women and children. I feel it is important to protest
against this kind of thing happening again.
In my heart I can't help feeling that paying the fine would be an
acceptance of my "guilty" conviction. It's time to stand up and say we
are unwilling to accept what has happened in Iraq and unwilling to accept
more war."
Fellow peace activist, Milan Rai also with Justice not Vengeance, whom
Evans was arrested with in 2005 served a prison earlier this year after
refusing to pay the fine for organising the unauthorised demonstration.
Rai said: "I could not co-operate with the erosion of civil liberties by
paying the fine, therefore I was imprisoned."
Maya Anne Evans has written a book 'Naming the Dead' about her
experiences of being an anti war activist. Available for £7 at

this sort of stuff makes me so angry, shouldn't the media be championing the cause of these people instead of ignoring and marginalising all dissent!! i'm really worried about the descent of our civil liberties under this government, i'm willing to vote conservative on the issue of ID cards and civil liberties alone..
