I am not sure how I missed this thread, but I took a class regarding just this sort of thing over the summer. It is a classic story really. Female help comes into the house to help with the husband and the children, even when there is not an affair to deal with, and the wife feels replaced. The wife sacks the female help and then accuses her of witchcraft (the sack comes first so that the "witch" can't take retribution while still living in the hosue). They were not normally younger women, but older, past child bearing age with no family to support them and totally at the mercy of the family that employed them.
