Thought this was quite funny! The architect must have been completely oblivious or was pulling a prank joke! |

I can't believe that it is just now become an issue...or better stated, that it is an issue. The building (according to CNN headline this morning) was built in the 60's, so it has been a swastika shaped building all of this time, without consequence. Now they are planning to spend 600K to change it. Not the best way to spend the money, IMO. |

i remember seeing this a few years back with google earth - funny really that they're going to spend 600k on redoing it!
interesting you say it was built in the 60's, so they knew of the swastika at the time ...
on that same page they have a link to this ...

I totally agree Spurs. It's a total waste of time and money. Especially if it was built BEFORE WWII.
It's not the symbol that is evil, scary, offensive, whatever. It's the meaning we tie to it. |

I believe that it was originally a Buddhist symbol (seems to me I learned that on this forum...), so it is the 20th century connotation that is offensive, not the symbol. Just one more reason to hate Hitler.....as if we need more! |

I think the Buddhist symbol is the mirror image of the Swastika used by the Nazis - not quite sure about why I am posting this |

It's Buddhist, Hindu and Jainism. Originally from Sanskrit.
I have quite a few Hindu pieces of art around my home and the symbol is on it.
Once again it's the meaning you attach to the symbol. Not the symbol itself.
I can understand if this building was made this way on purpose to be a symbol of hate. But it wasn't. It wasn't even meant to be the Asian representation of it. It was just done to make a building with a courtyard and have space.
With all the problems we have in this world, this is what people focus on and get upset about? Geez.
It's like the people in Chicago protesting and picketing the changing of Marshall's Fields store to be changed to Macy's! |

Oh no, that's much different!! Marshall Fields is a cherished childhood memory and Macy's is a parade...

Total waste of money.
"rooftop photovoltaic cells." : Maybe to make it a "stealth" / "cloaked" building so it looks like grass from the sky -- The Kilingons would be proud of the new technology .. after all, a building is bigger than a space ship.
Here's a suggestion : Demolish one of the legs of the "L" .. or close off one of the courtyards, so it is square. |
