I thought it was shocking, though wasn't surprised at all. Setting the tone Emily Maitlis managed to fit 2 quips about Big Brother in the intro alone and then we were treated to another BB reference later on from john o'farrell! If they are still banging on about Big Brother, it goes to show how they have nothing of any substance left with which to try and discredit GG..After all, they can hardly say he was wrong about the Iraq war / Afghanistan etc anymore.
Then by calling unannounced at the Respect office, and therefore half expecting not to be granted an interview, they were able to mock they party further, for 'not showing more respect' ha ha, so very clever.
Surely, all that's happening really is that the various factions of the party are trying to strengthen and unify the respect membership? Obviously doing this in public will attract attention from the press who will say, as newsnight did, that it spells then end for respect...but i think it is a risk worth taking and i for one have learnt more about what's really going on in the party and that can only be a good thing.
As for Oona King, well she would say that wouldn't she....it's still hurting, you can tell!
i've just looked on the respect blogspot thing and it looks like GG's motion was carried. so, it was all a storm in a teacup..but obviously that didn't stop newsnight from having a good go....http://respectuk.blogspot.com/
I've only just got round to watching that report. I couldn't be arsed yesterday as I wasn't in the mood and I didn't fancy getting annoyed by it.
The thing that struck me about the report was the snippet of Oona King. She actually had the gall to go on about fundamentalism in Islam in the East London area and spin it to make Respect look bad, when she herself used to represent those self-same people!
I wonder how many Muslims danced with rainbow streamers atop a Gay Pride float during her time? And if they'd refused back then, would that have been her fault, and worthy of a news report?
The fact that their reporter was kicked out of the Respect HQ on camera was spun ridiculously, too. They played that up, fully in the knowledge that most viewers would not be aware that George has long ago vowed never to appear on Newsnight again for any reason due to their insipid reporting. Armed with that knowledge, it's obvious that the guy would be escorted out, and the reporter himself, unless he is a complete idiot, must have known that he would be escorted out if he marched in declaring he was from Newsnight - and that's exactly why they had the camera there filming what would otherwise have been a very mundane piece of footage.
