i was talking to someone a while ago about this, the lack of anything related to politics in school - i didn't do anything, there wasn't a single lesson about it. its kinda weird, we're off round the world supposedly spreading freedom and democracy via shock and awe and yet most people here don't really understand it, how we got to where we are, how we had to fight for the rights we have, what democracy means and requires for it to work.
i think its deliberate as well. the lack of education, the fancy words, its just a way of kinda locking people out that you don't really want involved. make it sound complex, to difficult for us normal people to understand - then we'll leave it to those clever people educated at eton to sort things out ...
i mean say you really educated the entire population, the elite would be screwed. there was an interesting documentary a while back on bbc4 about the early 1900's and how the elites of the time were horrified that the general population, us poor people, were going to be educated. of course we never really got education, chomsky calls it imposed ignorance its just to train us up to follow orders, understand subordination to power, indoctrinate us with certain views that benefit the current system and train enough of us up to work in the shops, factorys, call centers and as cannon fodder for imperialist military excursions
if people were really educated, you think they'd be happy with what we currently call 'democracy'? you think we'd be invading iraq and afghanistan? they just wouldn't be able to get away with it if people were really educated and understood what was going on
we'd have a revolution before i've finished my cup of tea
if we really had true democracy though, we'd probably end up in a country where we went back to hanging people again ... |
