At the time I was a bit scathing of the way he put himself at risk while having a young family, but there's no doubting the amount of energy he's put into preservation of many species. |

I can't believe it's been a year.
I was quite harsh to him myself at the time. I made this picture for my blog the very day he died. I'm not too proud of it anymore, actually - rather thoughtless of me - haha!

Odd the way things work...The weekend that he died, I had my nephew, David. It was one of our "date weekends". I took him to our local marine science center because he loves to pet the stingrays and see the dolphins and turtles. While we were there, an ever-indulgent Beah (that is what Marcella's kids call me) bought him a stuffed animal of his choice....a beautiful gray stingray. I asked young David what the stingrays name was and he said...in the saged voice of a then 4 year old..."Steve". I brought him home and spent the night and the next morning we all learned of the passing of Steve Irwin at the barb of a stingray....Out of the mouths of babes.... |

Like so many crazy deaths I "expected" him to go too soon but not THAT way! He wasn't even messing with the ray if I recall. Not like the crocs! If he got eaten by a croc then perhaps the pain would be worse because he was always messing with them!
As far as how he lived ... well he grew up with it and probably didn't know any other way to be. but boy was he passionate! You could never accuse him of being half-hearted.
I wonder how Terry his wife is doing a year on. Easy for the chldren to pull themselves up and carry on. |

I can hardly believe it's been a year already. I've seen both his wife and daughter on tv a number of times and they looks as if they're coping extremely well--- at least on the outside. |

He was, and still is, extremely inspirational. He did what he loved and shared his passion with anyone who was willing to join him. I miss him. |
