Guest flies far for wedding, arrives a year early
Toronto teacher turns up in Wales to find pal's nuptials won't be until 2008
Updated: 10:29 a.m. ET July 11, 2007
LONDON - Teacher Dave Barclay flew thousands of miles across the Atlantic to Wales to attend his friend’s wedding, only to discover he was a year early.
Barclay, 34, was told about the wedding earlier in the year and assumed it was to take place in 2007.
It was only when he had flown into Cardiff from Toronto, Canada, and rang the bridegroom seeking details of the venue that he discovered the wedding was in 2008.
“I am a year early — yeah, my mates are loving it, aren’t they,” he told BBC Radio Wales.
The groom, Dave Best, had emailed his friend at the start of the year.
“He just said July the 6th and I assumed it was this year because if you tell the guy July 6th, they’re going to think it’s this year,” Barclay said.
Barclay, who has been teaching in Toronto for three years spent $1,015 on his premature flight.
“At least it’s assured me a mention in the speech next year,” he added. |

Hmmm. He has a point. If you mention a date (in the future) without a year, it's fair to assume the current year is implied.
At the very least, all his pints should be paid for. |

you'd think he'd check though - hearing something months ago then just getting on a flight suggests a slight lack of communication skills... haha
he does deserve a pint or two though |

Oh my God, he's a teacher? Sad state Toronto is in. Hmmm.....Normally, an official wedding invitation will come in the mail, unless his friend in Wales is a cheapskate and is the type of guy to send official invites via email. I'm thinking the teacher is a Div. Well, at least he gets to have a nice visit to Wales, it's not a waste of money. |

Well I guess there really isn't a question of an invitation for hospitals... "The Doctors of General Hospital would like to invite you to your surgery. A small reception will be held afterwards in the recovery room. Water and ice chips will be served"
As far as the wedding goes, you would think that he would wonder where the invite was. I would be more likely to think it had been called off with out one and at least call. |
