Innocent Phil is furious that Ian suspects him of battering Stella after she develops a nasty, self-inflicted bruise on her head.

And Phil comes close to discovering a sinister secret about his bride-to-be when he insists on visiting her parents.

“There’s an awful lot Phil doesn’t know about Stella,” admits Steve McFadden, who plays him. “He has no idea what she’s really like.

“Just because she’s clever and middle-class, not blonde and brassy like his usual sort of women, he thinks she’ll be nice and predictable. How wrong can you be?”

As the week opens, Stella is furious when it turns out that Ben is enjoying football camp and refuses to speak to her when he phones home. She angrily headbutts the wall in frustration.

“Phil sees a big bruise on her forehead, but she says she tripped over his laundry,” says Steve.

“He has no reason to doubt her, but he’s glad when she offers to cover it up because he knows what Ian would make of it.”

Peggy is pushing Stella to invite more guests to the wedding, but Stella is dreading any contact with her family and hides her parents’ invitation in her briefcase.

Later in the week, Ian does notice Stella’s bruise and talks to Billy about it. “Phil finds out what Ian is saying and heads off to have a word,” adds Steve.

“But he’s more upset when he discovers the hidden wedding invite in Stella’s briefcase. He insists on going to meet her parents the next day.

“Stella has no alternative but to go along with it. It’s a very strange visit. The house has a weird atmosphere and Phil is surprised to see a picture of Stella’s sister on the wall. He didn’t even know that she existed.”

It’s also a shock to Stella’s mum, Marion, that Phil already has two children. Marion asks Stella if she has told Phil about her sister.

“Phil is bewildered,” says Steve. “There’s something odd going on, but he can’t work out what it is.”

and from the Mirror

There are many ways a young lady can woo her ideal man. She could entice him with exotic perfume and provocative lingerie, or perhaps a handful of testimonials from satisfied boyfriends.

But Racy Stacey turning up at Bradley’s door wearing a pair of Vulcan pointy ears that would make Spock proud is an – ahem – ‘Enterprising’ way to the heart of a man obsessed by Star Trek.

To suggest that Bradders is about to boldly go where no man has gone before is a slight exaggeration, as there are probably fewer stars in the galaxy than notches on Stacey’s bedpost, including Brad’s bad dad Max. But what is ‘the other woman’ supposed to do if her secret lover is apparently in the process of starting a new life in Spain with his pregnant wife Tanya and their two daughters?

Go back to his son on the rebound, it seems. Not that she is willing to admit this to herself at first. But after she discovers he’s been trying to find out the identity of her ‘mystery man’ by sneakily rummaging through her drawers – and not for the first time – the carrot-topped lad does win her over.

That’s because Brad tunelessly serenades her at Shirley’s karaoke party on Tuesday, even if his slushy singing kicks off a fight with a bunch of burly builders.

After launching herself into the fray, Stacey discovers she still has strong feelings for Bradley, and the least she can do for him is wear a pair of plastic ears on Thursday. Oh, beam her up, Bradders…

ALSO:

After giving birth to her beautiful baby daughter Summer, Dawn’s ordeal is far from over. For when she wakes up on Monday, Dr Mad May is holding her precious child.

In one of the best-played and most harrowing stories in Soapland, May is still prepared to ‘buy’ the infant she claims is her own. It’s a fraught and violent time as Rob again pledges his love for Dawn, and there’s a fight followed by an arrest. Don’t miss it.
