Manure dumped at Ramsay's eatery
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's Claridge's restaurant has had a tonne of horse manure dumped on its doorstep. Protesters from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) were demonstrating against the chef cooking horse meat on his TV show The F-Word. The animal rights group has accused Ramsay of mounting a TV ratings-grabbing "gimmick". The programme said it gives paramount importance to the welfare of animals bred for consumption.
On Channel 4's The F-Word, journalist and broadcaster Janet Street-Porter explores the possibility of eating horse meat. But a spokesman for Peta said: "Horses are often transported long distances in Europe without any food or water on extremely crowded trucks. Some horses arrive at the abattoir injured or dead. Those who survive are often still conscious when their throats are slit by abattoir workers." Anita Singh, of Peta Europe, said: "Will it be a family dog next? Chickens, pigs, cows and horses all suffer fear and discomfort when they are robbed of their lives for nothing more than a fleeting taste or a TV rating."
A statement issued on behalf of The F-Word said: "Although perfectly legal to eat horse meat in Britain, the usual method of obtaining good quality product is to order from abroad. While the item includes a visit to rural France, where sales of horse meat are rising, it does not extend to a discussion on animals being transported beyond their country of origin. Neither does it seek to suggest anything other than the paramount importance of the ethical welfare of any animals bred for consumption."

haha, excellent - just a pity they didn't catch Ramsey under the dump... I wonder what they could be charged with? Littering? Whatever it is, it would be worth it for getting up the nose of these arseholes who spend hundreds on a single meal just because they can! |

Horse meat is a legit food & not a gimmick.
The French have been cooking it for years as have many in other countries...
I myself used to be partial to a bit of horse (eating it as food beofre we get dirty ideas)... |

Janet Street Porter is chased off by the police for selling horsemeat at a horse-racing meeting in a trailer I saw the other day - that's the kind of gimmick that they're about. |

Are you sure she wasn't chased off just for being Janet Street Porter? |

O I C...
I thunk they were saying that the eating of horse was a gimmick..
It's rather 'sweet' tasting as far as meat goes... it's a bit like bison meat in that respect, but not cooked right & it's like rubber... |

thing is though, the way i see it, if your going to eat one animal, then you might as well eat the other - its only cos we see horses and dogs in the way we do that some get funny about eating them, but are quite happy to eat the chicken or pig - if you'd been bought up eating dog or horse you wouldn't think anything of it
i think if your going to eat any animal, cow or horse, it should be raised and cared for correctly, given a good and as natural life as possible, and killed as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimize its suffering, making as much use of the animal as possible afterwards
i think i'd rather eat a horse than had lived a good life than a chicken who suffered from birth to slaughter in a cage pumped up on chemicals without sunlight
i'm all for dumping manure at ramseys place though |

For the sake of a lively argument, regarding "if your going to eat one animal, then you might as well eat the other" what about eating humans ? (of-course, they would be dead first through no fault of the eater) |

Would easting horses be called "Horsism" ? | If you wanted to you could call it that - I'd call it carnivorism |

I might be in the minority here, but I like Janet Street Porter and Gordon Ramsey. I know that would change if I ever worked for him for even 5 minutes, but his TV show is always really funny.
PETA, on the other hand, make me sick. |

I'm with you kate. I don't think I want to hang out with either of them personally but I do find them entertaining.
I'm not a big fan of PETA but I do give generously to the ASPCA and the Humane Society. I find them a lot more level headed and they do a lot more in my opinion for animals. |

Yea. In my opinion, PETA are to Animal Rights as the BNP are to sensible immigration control - they both take things way too far, and secretly (sometimes not so secretly) support criminal activity. Plus that woman, the head of PETA, is on a different planet. She talks about "total animal liberation", which basically means no one could even have pets, and animals would be let roam anywhere they wanted. Nutter. |

Exactly. They take it way to far. And in my opinion they do things that are just as bad in the name of protecting animals. I would much rather deal with a sane group. And if she tries to take my dogs away so they can be free. She'll be in a lot of trouble. From me and my dogs! |

I'm with you as well, neokate. I find Gordon Ramsay entertaining and PETA rather annoying---- just my personal opinion as I think they take things too far.
I wouldn't eat horse meat myself, but that's just me. I think any animal should be treated well, whether it's a horse or pig or whatever. I understand that many people don't feel comfortable eating meat and that's just fine, but I do like it. We all tend to feel extra sensitive towards animals like dogs and horses because we often have those for pets and therefore have emotions towards them.
Unless they can prove that Ramsay knowingly bought horse meat from an abbatoir that uses these kinds of horrific practices, then I don't think they should have targeted him. But I can also totally understand how some don't like him ------ and I don't think I could work for him either, neokate |
