I've been aware for sometime where the US forces are mainly based in Afghanistan. They are there to facilitate easy building of the planned oil/gas pipeline from the caspian, through Afghanistan to Pakistan and beyond, 'till now ...

Quote:
In 1998, Dick Cheney, now US vice-president but then chief executive of a major oil services company, remarked: "I cannot think of a time when we have had a region emerge as suddenly to become as strategically significant as the Caspian." But the oil and gas there is worthless until it is moved. The only route which makes both political and economic sense is through Afghanistan.

from a guardian article in 2001,

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Columnists/Column/0,5673,579174,00.html

The oil and gas belongs politically at least to Turkmenistan. Yesterday Turkmenistan sold the gas rights to Putain.

Tomorrow Condo Rice is going to Moskow. She is going to talk about US plans to put missile bases in eastern Europe. Two reptiles in the same tank. The flies on the walls won't probably won't last long, but I wouldn't mind taking my chances Smile

details,

The US gov. are saying this isn't the start of a new cold war, we'll see.

At the end of the Guardian article above the journalist says,

I believe that the US government is genuine in its attempt to stamp out terrorism by military force in Afghanistan, however misguided that may be. But we would be naïve to believe that this is all it is doing.

If you look at where the US forces are mainly based in Afghanistan, I think the first sentence in that quote is the naive one. It will be interesting to see what movements the US troops make in the next few months, I can't see 'em coming home any time soon.

I'll bet Putin will be sleeping well ..

Well, I guess we'll see. Time will tell, but I'd put "The Guardian" in the same category as "The New York Slimes" and "The Enquirer". Very biased, and I'd question their agendas. Anyway, I suppose anything is possible.

I like the Guardian .. it is only pipped by the Independent (especially when Robert Fisk writes).

Most other mainstream papers lean towards Fox News type coverage.
