Ok, but Cheers was pretty tame really. How often did you see people actually getting drunk and fighting in the way that Eastenders features so often? It's crossing that line which I think american producers would baulk at.

One other aspect is that the show is aimed at working-class people with little disposable income (even though it has many characters who are aspirational in the way they are still supposedly "salt-of-the-earth"). Would that appeal to the advertisers who would provide the funding?

I just keep thinking of Roseanne as the starting point as far as American tv is concerned.

Also, what about "All in th Family" the show that was a spin off of "Till Death Do Us Part". It was on in the 70s in the states. It was blue collar and very daring for it's time dealing with racism, rape, sex, and was on at regular sitcom hours. That was long before Roseanne and the like

but don't they broadcast shows later according to timezone? I just can't imagine Hill Street Blues being on at 6pm, though I completely accept that as a brilliant show.

What time is Eastenders currently broadcast on satellite channels? That's probably a good indicator.

On thinking I reckon this is more of a class thing, are there any american shows that show normal unprofessional people living their lives, ducking and diving where needed? Can you imagine a Philly Keith? While I'm on that idea, the completely unbelievable character of "Bradley", whose acceptance into a "bank in the city" I don't think for a minute is believable - what's that about? how many people in the East End could come from nothing and get in to these establishments? I'll tell you - very, very few, if at all... He just wouldn't have the social contacts.

Also, now that I think - who in the East End actually cares about the private life of their doctor? It's a load of bollocks! The people in the east end of Glasgow would see them as outsiders, without a shadow of a doubt. They have no reason to complain about anything as they have their own washing machines!

Ok, so it's late and I probably wouldn't think this much about a soap-opera at any other time, but what the hell... haha

I just don't think it would work for many reasons , some that have been mentioned already ,

A keith miller in philly being one of them, There is no way they could get a Square together like EE has .....lets face it...can u give me one place in America where you will see such a mix up of people living ? Black ...white.....Indian....Turkish....Greek....? a place where everyone would eat everymorning ? A market ??? A pub ??? A Club??? Mob types ??
docters ??? a laundry??

It just would not work .....plus theres no black cabs .....No tube.....and where would they all go when they get in troble ??? Florida??? and then theres the drinking age here....lol i could go on and on and on .....

I was thinking of the Black Donelleys too!

I wasn't saying a drama doesn't work ... I was saying that the EE format as it stands (1/2 hour drama) doesn't work here ... PLUS you couldn't have it revolve around a bar here. The religious right wouldn't support it.
