Two more endangered Mexican gray wolves have been released in a remote area of New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the male and a pregnant female were transferred from the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge wolf facility to a staging area at the edge of the wilderness.

They were released Tuesday.

The agency says the female was released prior to birthing to increase chances that the wolves will den in the area.

The federal agency began releasing wolves on the New Mexico-Arizona border in 1998 to re-establish the species in part of its historic range.

The animals had been hunted to near extinction in the early 1900s.

The only thing that worries me about this is people killing them. Beautiful creatures, but the war between humans and wolves around here is sad and not likely to end anytime soon.

But they don't stay secluded and that is the problem. There is a lot of ranch land here. Where there are ranches, there are sheep, and like you said, where there are sheep, there are wolves.

The wolves migrate towards the food like any sane animal. Ranches then shoot them for invading their territory. It is a sad cycle. I understand WHY the ranchers do it, but it doesn't make it any less sad.
