Chief: At least 20 dead in campus shootings
Story Highlights
• NEW: Police chief says at least 20 people are dead, some of them students
• University reporting that a suspected shooter is in custody, another sought
• AP: 1 dead, 1 wounded in first reported shooting on Virginia Tech campus
• Student describes situation as "mayhem"; says 2 students jumped from window
(CNN) -- The Virginia Tech police chief said at least 20 people were killed in twin shootings on the Blacksburg campus Monday morning.
"Some victims were shot in a classroom," Chief Wendell Flinchum said, adding that the gunman was dead.
"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified." (Map of Blacksburg)
The attacks mark the worst school shooting incident since 1999 when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press that 17 Virginia Tech students were being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries.
Sharon Honaker at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center told CNN that four patients had been transported there, one in critical condition.
One person was killed and others were wounded at multiple locations inside a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., Flinchum said. Two hours later, another shooting at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, resulted in multiple casualties, the university reported. The first reported shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a co-ed dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium.
Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."
The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele.
Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.
"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.
Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.
"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.
Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangsVideo)
"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."
Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.
The university is updating its 26,000 students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.
The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.
After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said.
"A gunman is loose on campus. Stay in buildings until further notice. Stay away from all windows," read a warning from the university.
"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said. |

While I am sure it is a frighteneing thing to go through I am AMAZED at how different things are nowadays ... writing stories and posting them on-line? Talk about "realtime" news ... It is cool but scary at the same time ... how much misinformation is floating around right now? |

MOVED
I'm after turning CNN on and seeing 22 students were killed in a shooting at Virginia Tech Campus and 21 are injured. They're saying the gunmen is dead.
What a bloody nightmare. I feel so horrible for the friends and families of the students gunned down. It's just such a horrible thing to happen these kids go to school and can't be safe from maniacs that get the urge to take innocent lives. Really makes me sick. Bless them all. |

Here they're after saying 22 confirmed dead and 29 injured. We'll know the facts later on I'm sure once they've the situation a bit more in hand.
It's a tragedy for sure and it really sickens me these people that put their personal problems in the form of a gun and shoot innocent people. WTF did they ever do to deserve this? It's a rhetorical question because there's no real answer other than a selfish piece of human waste decided to take them with him. |

Such a sad story. I haven't been at home to see the news. I feel for all the families involved. What a tragedy! And I'm with you Irish, I have to think what they did to deserve this. |

How many shootings will it take before they ban the sale of guns? |

I'm sorry but banning the sale of guns isn't the answer. People will still get them if they want to whether it's legal or illegally.
My questions would be how many times does this have to happen that we don't start paying attention to people with strange behavior or sudden changes in personality? When will be start noticing children with odd behavior and take precautions instead of ignorning them? When will make sure those people with dangerous mental illness are medicated whether they want to or not?
Not all shootings have links that are warning signs but a lot of these big ones do. |

Your argument makes no sense. To accept it we would need to believe that Americans had a homicidal mental illness rate of 40x greater than brits.
Intentional gun homicides per year US: 8000+, UK 150+.
It is beyond obvious that it is down to the legal availability of firearms. When people can legally acquire an assault rifle these things will keep happening. An assualt rifle, for god's sake, what purpose do they serve apart from murdering other people. This isn't a freedom issue except in the sense that people should have the freedom not to be shot by maniacs with military hardware. |

Just because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean a thing to me.
I work in mental health, I read the studies, I deal with the kids and the parents. I see a lot and a lot of times my kids that had very bad issues as children are the ones that end up doing most of the violent crime in the community.
I'm not saying firearms aren't a problem. But we have other ones that lead to the gun use. Because believe me, I know plenty of people who have firearms and haven't shot a person. However, about 80% of children that have passed through the schools that I've seen with emotional issues are already in trouble as young adults. |

Nobody is denying there are children/young adults with mental health issues. The point is that there is no evidence to suggest that these issues are 40x more prevalent in the US. There are plenty of people in Western Europe with the same problems but there aren't 8000+ people shot every year |
