|
|
|
|
A diplomatic row has broken out between Germans and Italians over a bear shot dead by Bavarian hunters last summer.
Rome is demanding Bruno the bear back, claiming he is Italian state property.
But despite a request from the German government, the Bavarian state environment minister is refusing to hand the brown bear's body over.
Bruno took a tragic wrong turn in becoming the first brown bear to have been spotted in Germany for 170 years.
Bavarian hunters ended his life - but not the story.
Nine months on, the Italians are demanding Bruno's body back. All 100kg of it.
But the Bavarians have blown the idea that Bruno is Italian state property out of the water.
As far as they are concerned, since Bruno died on Bavarian soil - the carcass is theirs to keep.
They plan to stuff him and put him on display in a local museum.
Germany's federal government tried to intervene on the side of the Italians.
But the Bavarians will not budge.
As for the late bear himself, as long as Bruno's fate remains unclear, he will remain in a freezer somewhere in Bavaria.
_______________
It is sad that Bruno was killed. However, how on earth did he get his paws on the a guinea pig. I didn't know they ran out in the wild over there! |

Forget the guinea pig.... how in the heck did he walk from Italy all the way to Germany without being stopped/noticed?
All I can say is that I hope this "custody" battle is much shorter than the Anna Nicole Smith baby battle. |

Living in an area known for the bears, they have a way about them which prevents them from coming into contact with humans, for the most part (unless they walk into your open door when you're cooling your house off in the early evening, which happened to one of my co-workers last summer).
One of the things hikers in the area are remiss to be without is bear repellant. Yes, there is such a thing. |

I'd also like to know what the hell the border police were doing and why he wasn't asked for his passport. All this money for border security and a big bear can slip through without being noticed?
Okay all sarcasm aside. I'd like to shoot some buckshot in the arses of the bastards that killed it. Why people feel killing animals is some sort of sport need to be a running target themselves and see how the hell they like it. |

I'm with you there, Irish. If a guy wants an adrenalin rush from the "thrill of the hunt," throw him in shark-infested waters with a drop or two of chum. That'll give him a high... |

The bear wasn't killed though by sport hunters - it was deamed wise to kill him as he had started killing life-stock in the area and was considered a problem. However i also don't agree that hunting is a 'sport' |

Where does it mention "guinea pig" in the article? Did I really miss something? |

It doesn't say that anywhere in the story. It merely says 'Bavarian hunters ended his life" |

Sorry, I edited it out by mistake. Here it is
Bruno wandered from Italy to Germany via Austria and was gunned down after eating 30 sheep, four rabbits and a guinea pig. |

I followed the story when it was happening. I was in Germany at the time hence why I know about this case. It was all over the newspapers. The Italians, Austrians and Germans were all going crazy - especially the farmers as they wanted him to be killed as they felt threatened by the beast. It was actually quite sad because it was said the bear was driven out of Italy as there wasn't enough food for him and hence he went on his trip. |

Okay that gives me a better understanding of it all and thanks for sharing it. You're right with it being quite sad with the bear being driven out, but unfortunately it's so called advancement of man that's doing it to animals all over the world. We continue building and leave little left for them to survive on. Not only are their natural habitats taken but their food sources as well, then when one of these animals walks into a town one day people are shocked at the sight of them, but where else do they go when they're starving to death, and why does man see the need to kill them? They could have put the bear to sleep and carted him off away from farms and civilization completely so he might fend for himself.
All just my opinion and not directed at you of course, but I'm sure you understand that. |

I think they didn't want to cart him away as they were convinced he would come back as he had found much more food in this new place. The 'funny' thing was everybody was well excited to start out with as there hadn't been any bears in Bavaria or Austria for centuries so he was sort of showered in adoration to begin with but when he started eating sheep the farmers suddenly didn't care about that too much anymore.
See I fully agree with your point - I think man-kind is just far too selfish to care about any other species and all we care about is enriching ourselves! But that is a complete different story |

That's what I'd gathered about the story. They seemed delighted with him being about and that's why I was so confused as to why they'd kill him. I'm sure they could have found somewhere to take him to but not knowing much about the terrain perhaps not I dunno.
It's a pity either way the poor thing was put down, and the idea of them wanting to stuff him is really off putting. I'd rather see one of the hunters stuffed with his gun shoved up his arse being perfectly honest...well hunters in general that is. |
