do we all now agree that by the time trident comes on stream it may be useless because of either the gps, the early warning or software virus
by the chinese russians or the israelis
remember in 30 years time britain may well be a majority muslim country and maybe just maybe they might want to target the missiles elsewhere
so lets scrap it now |

I agree with Karl that we shouldn't order the Trident update.

I fear your reference to "majority muslim country" might be used by some as an excuse to be even more hostile to muslims. We do have changed leaderships in the UK, and who knows what government will come into power (whether by a vote or militarily). That fear alone should stop Britain ordering new Trident. The power to destroy the world shouldn't be in ANYONE's hands. Who knows who will have their finger on the WMD triggers in the next decades. Indeed, the hardship in the next few decades is to survive the changes occuring on the planet due to weather changes (irresepective of the cause). Having Nuclear weapons is a HUGE COST just to safely maintain or dismantle .. let alone use.
Looking at the US, who would have predicated a decade ago that they would have a regime like the current one in power which has effectively scrapped the constitution.
There are many possible reasons why you may want to target it "elsewhere", e.g. What if an anti-British regime comes to power in a region which has been "hard-coded" now as "friendly" [thus can't be targeted].
Another danger is if any anti-British regime has acquired [or paid for] the knowledge how to hack into the system (or use the "back door").
Another danger is simply "accidents" [like the recent death of 2 British sailors on a Submarine]. Submarines are dangerous even before adding Nuclear missiles. |
