Runaway cow now wanted alive, not dead
26th August 2011

Yvonne the runaway cow who has eluded hunters and would-be helpers alike in the woods of Upper Bavaria since May, is still on the loose, but she’s no longer running for her life. The district office in Mühldorf am Inn, the Bavarian town responsible for the area where Yvonne is on the run, decided on Friday to not renew the general shooting permit it had issued on her. Only three experts are allowed to use a stun gun, should they find Yvonne, a spokeswoman said.

The hunting permit was issued after Yvonne had run across a road in front of a police car, causing officials to deem her a danger to traffic. Two weeks ago, though, the license was suspended, in agreement with worried veterinary services and the animal sanctuary Mühldorf Aiderbichl, which purchased the cow and intends to put her out to pasture - once she’s caught, that is. Officials now say the cow poses no acute risk for road traffic.

Representatives of the Aiderbichl sanctuary have tried, so far in vain, to catch the cow with high-profile efforts, including using other animals to try to lure her out of hiding.

Yvonne the cow has been found
Cow who escaped from a Bavarian farm as she was about to be slaughtered, is tracked down after three months on the run

A cow called Yvonne, who escaped from a Bavarian farm after apparently sensing she was about to be slaughtered, has been tracked down after three months on the run.

The Gut Aiderbichl animal sanctuary, which now owns the errant bovine, said a farmer had called to say Yvonne had wandered on to her land.

In a statement on its website, the sanctuary said one of its staff was able to confirm Yvonne's identity by a tag on her ear.

Having been fattened up for slaughter, the six-year-old brown dairy cow escaped from her field in the village of Zangberg, 50 miles north-east of Munich, on 24 May. She managed to breach the electric fence surrounding her farm before seeking sanctuary in nearby forests. She led a quiet life grazing among the fir trees until she was nearly involved in a collision with a passing police car.

Following her escape the cow became, in the words of one newspaper, "a kind of freedom fighter for the animal loving German republic". As word of her escapades spread, animal protection activists got involved, incensed that local hunters had been given permission to shoot Yvonne on sight. Gut Aiderbichl, an animal sanctuary over the Austrian border in Salzburg, agreed to buy Yvonne from the farm for €600.

Her whereabouts became a national obsession in Germany, with one tabloid offering a reward of €10,000 for her safe return.

Her story has spread across the world. in South Africa a psychic claimed to have communicated with her. While an animal whisperer from Switzerland failed to coax her back from the Bavarian forest using telepathy.

Yvonne can now look forward to spending the rest of her days in a paddock with grass to graze on.

Yvonne the runaway cow to be a moo-vie star
13 Apr 2012
thelocal.de

Yvonne the runaway cow who became a German media sensation last summer will be charging onto the silver screen when she stars in her very own feature film – “Cow on the Run”. The Bavarian bovine escaped in May 2011 when she was being shipped from Austria to Bavaria. She fought her way through an electric fence and slipped into the woods.

A wild cow-chase ensued before she was caught in August. Now Yvonne is to be the star of her very own €30 million feature film, set for release in 2014. Yet the question of who will play her is not going to be a problem – the film will be animated – and Yvonne will stay in the fields of Austrian rescue centre Gut Aiderbichl where she now lives. Munich-based production firm Papa-Löwe and Max Howard, producer of Disney classic “The Lion King”, knocked on the door at the Austrian animal rescue centre and put forward their plan for “Cow on the Run.” “We’re thrilled,” Britta Freitag, Gut Aiderbichl’s spokeswoman told The Local. “The film should be funny and educational, to teach children about rescued animals and also what we use cows for,” Freitag said.

Whether or not Yvonne, or even the Gut Aiderbichl centre, will cash in from the film is yet to be seen, although Freitag confirmed that, “if the film does well we may get a bit of money, which we will put towards looking after the animals in the sanctuary.” She said that given the choice of actor to voice Yvonne, she would plump for Franziska Pigulla, who did the German voice for X-Files agent Dana Scully.
