LONDON (AFP) — An exact replica of a 40-metre (130-foot) long one-man anti-war protest outside Britain's parliament won this year's Turner Prize on Monday.
Mark Wallinger's painstaking recreation, "State Britain", which is now featured inside the Tate Britain gallery in Liverpool, was praised by the award panel for its "immediacy, visceral intensity and historic importance."
The 48-year-old artist initially made headlines for his film "Sleeper" in which he dressed up as a bear and wandered around a Berlin art gallery for 10 nights.
But it was his detailed replica of protestor Brian Haw's encampment facing the Houses of Parliament in Westminster that scooped up the 25,000-pound (35,200-euro, 51,600-dollar) prize.
The award goes every year to a British artist or an artist resident in Britain under 50 for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of work.
Judges said it "combines a bold political statement with art's ability to articulate fundamental human truths."
Critics also praised him for managing to exhibit Haw's entire protest encampment, much of which was removed by police in May, in an art museum.
Haw began his protest his June 2001, demonstrating against economic sanctions levied on Iraq, and has maintained it ever since, in defiance of authorities' attempts to evict him.
Wallinger, who made the shortlist in 1995 but has never won the prize before, paid tribute to Haw, describing him as a "remarkable man who has waged a tireless campaign against the folly and hubris of this government's foreign policy."
He beat three other shortlisted artists -- Zarina Bhimji, Nathan Coley and Mike Nelson -- who each won 5,000 pounds.
Speaking to reporters outside the exhibit in Liverpool, which will be next year's European Capital of Culture, Wallinger said he had "managed to defer this moment for some time -- I've practised losing."
"State Britain was the best exhibition on show this year, I don't feel any modesty about that."
Last year's winner of the Turner Prize was German painter Tomma Abts for her work -- small oil paintings and acrylics that are always presented in the same 48-centimetre by 38-centimetre (19-inch by 15-inch) format.
Critics have argued for years, however, about whether the modern art award puts too much emphasis on hype over talent.
Previous winners of the often-controversial prize have included Damien Hirst, who won it in 1995 with pieces including a rotting cow's head complete with maggots and flies, and the 1998 winner, Chris Ofilie, who incorporated elephant dung into all his paintings.
The award has also made a household name of Tracey Emin, who was nominated in 1999 for her notorious "My Bed".
Surrounded by condoms, cigarette butts and stained underwear, the installation showed how her own bed looked after she had spent several days in it following the breakdown of a relationship. |
i wonder if wallinger will give the money to the antiwar movement? i mean, he didn't really do anything! he just copied what had been done
these are pictures of the original outside parliament before the police came in the middle of the night and wrecked it all. bastards. its a tiny display now |
