Wisconsin town holds fried 'Testicle Festival'
ELDERON, Wis. (AP) - Around here, it may be tough to pass up anything deep-fried. Wisconsinites have deep-fried cheese curds, candy bars and Twinkies. They now have deep-fried livestock testicles, too. More than 300 people paid $5 for all-you-can-eat goat, lamb and bull testicles Saturday at the ninth annual Testicle Festival at Mama's Place Bar and Grill in Elderon in central Wisconsin. "Once you get over the mental (aspect) of what you're eating, it's just like eating any other food, and it tastes good," Buster Hoffman said.
Festival founder Nancy Fenske said the festival grew out of her late husband Roger's birthday party 12 years ago. They decided to have "a nut fry" at Mama's Place after bringing back lamb fries from a trip to Montana. The event grew every year and now they fry up to 100 pounds of testicles, she said. "What else can you do in a small town?" Fenske said.
Butch Joubert, 58, likes the parts sandwiched between bread with tartar sauce. They're not so different from regular meatballs also served at the festival, he said. "After a few beers, you can't really tell the difference," Joubert said.

After a few beers I might manage a kebab, but it would need a lot to get me to eat sheep balls! |

Around here they are called "Rocky Mountain Oysters" and are generally made from bulls. There are some other slang terms for them. But I think everyone who eats them is just nuts! |

If you are prepared to eat an animal, then it is secondary which part of it you each.
Though definitely Ugh factor here.
Though if it was "raw nuts", that would be another issue |

Not so...
Some of us in the world do indeed eat animal flesh to sustain us... rather a large factor of the world populas BTW...
However, as much as certain parts of an animal for meat eaters (READ AS OFFAL) is not on the menu & for various reasons, for those in need it is...
If meat is so bad, why does it taste so yummy??? (joke BTW).
You mention raw nuts... yet that is indeed what a fair few of the worlds populas deem to be normal & is a part of a regular diet.
(so is sheeps eyes etc)
I admit that perhaps if they were not in such an arrid enviroment they would prefer to eat vegitation of some sort, but alas raw testicles of animals is a way of getting vitamins, minerals & protein which is essential to their well being... even if they don't know the 'chemistry of vitamins, minerals.. it's natural.
It's a part of the animal that they consume... there is worse in the world of gastronomy such as the eating of monkey brains, goats brains, entestines etc...
If you are able to go to Tesco's or another store & buy Veggies (Organic or not) then you have a choice...
I still have yet to see any store as such in the middle of an arrid environ where the practice of eating testes is a regular occurance...
Now having the want or need to fry them & eat them in a more 'capable of vegative sustanance' country or 'space' may indeed bring on a "YUK" factor... but then again they are not far from an area & time where RAW offal was the way of the world & thus it is one step up on the ladder is it not? |
