A Nebraska woman was charged with neglect of a dependent person after leaving her husband unattended in a car outside a Council Bluffs casino.
Judy Lea Fairbanks, 52, of Bellevue, Neb., was charged Saturday after she was found gambling at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs.
Police said she left her husband in the car and taped a sign to the window, which said ''I have a disability. Do not be alarmed. I am resting. Please do not call security.''
Fairbanks' husband cannot speak or care for himself, the police report said.
Officials estimate he had been left in the vehicle on the third floor of the parking garage for about an hour before he was discovered sleeping in the front passenger seat.
The temperature was about 28 degrees at the time, according to the National Weather Service.
An investigation revealed the same couple was involved in a similar incident on March 6.
Judy Fairbanks was arrested, charged with neglect and transported to jail.

Well ... I am not condoning her behavior but I know that caring for a debilitated loved one is hard as hell and if you have no one to support you and help out once in a while it can drive you NUTS! I am sure we will see more to this story!
I feel nothing but sympathy for the whole family. |

I just don't see how she could do this twice to him, and it's fairly obvious she's putting him in harms way. To me that should overrule the need to go to a casino? He could have died, and I don't think boredom gives anyone the right to dismiss the well being of another and put them in harms way like that.
If she feels she can't look after him or needs a hand there must be a way to get help from her state surly? |

I agree, Marcella. Respite care is a much needed but hard to find thing.
But to leave him outside a casino? She must have a pretty bad addiction to gambling to do this rather than just not go at all. |

I guess that's what I meant by it can drive you nuts.
I have known too many people who took on the job of caring for loved ones in need of constant supervision and I have witnessed how it takes it's toll on the relationships of the families and the health of the caregiver. ... From my mother-in-law caring for her husband who suffered from Parkinson's and Depression, to my aunt looking after my nana with dementia, and a good friend caring for his father who suffered from diabetes and congestivie heart failure and spoke ONLY Italian. Maintaining relationships and friendships is so difficult when this extra "baggage" is tossed in the mix.
Here in the USA respite care and "assistance" is next to impossible to get from the government. Again - I am not condoning or trying to justify her actions but I am saying in her shoes I don't know if I could handle it differently. |
