Galloway urges voters to desert the BNP

GEORGE Galloway is appealing to the working classes to desert the British National Party. The Respect Party MP also urged Barking and Dagenham residents who are fed up with New Labour to support his party at next year's Greater London Authority elections. At a public meeting last week, the MP launched a scathing attack on the BNP but said the white working classes who had supported the far right party last May had a "right to be angry". Respect said it needed to attract just five per cent of the vote to get a seat on the London Assembly in May 2008.

Building fall sparks MP's fears

AS THE dust from the rubble of the CityTex building settled and searches continued for bodies or survivors on Wednesday morning, serious questions were being asked about the collapse. MP George Galloway said he had been told it was the latest in a series of collapses across London. All construction work, including major internal alterations, needs to be signed off by approved building control inspectors.

Since the late 1980s, developers have had two choices: they can either appoint Government-approved private inspection companies or follow the traditional route through the local authority. Because councils are obliged to publish their rates, the competition is not on a level playing field and Town Halls are frequently undercut. Private companies can be appointed for any kind of work, large or small. In the building 'El Dorado' that is Tower Hamlets, about 10 per cent of building control work is monitored by private companies. In those cases, the council's only involvement is to keep a register of when the building control starts and finishes. Inspection of the CityTex building was being carried out by Regional Building Control Ltd, based in Waltham Abbey. Managers there were unavailable for comment yesterday (Weds).

But Bethnal Green and Bow's Mr Galloway said he had deep concerns over the process. "This disaster also raises profound questions about both the capacity of the planning and building regulation departments to monitor adequately construction work. Concerns have been expressed to me about the privatisation of the building control function and its adequacy. This is a matter of life and death and must entail that there is an urgent review by the council of regulation in this area."

RESPECT Against Racism In Barking & Dagenham, London

The Respect Party launched their campaign to build an alternative to racism and bigotry in the Borough of Barking and Dagenham on Thursday 8 th February. Speakers at the public meeting included Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, George Galloway, Newham Respect Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit and others. Barking and Dagenham residents filled the venue to hear why they should join Respect and why Respect is the only party that can oppose the mounting divisions and intolerance in the Borough.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit said: "In 1997 we had high hopes for the Labour government as we needed a replacement to the Tories who had for two decades plundered the country's resources and dismantled any concept of community, social justice and unity.

"But the New Labour government failed to deliver on their promises here in the East end and nationally. Barking and Dagenham like Newham need to oppose New Labour and the Tories but also need to oppose parties whose foundations ar e rooted in some of the most vile and vicious racist ideologies, who want to divide society and pit races against one another, and whose views oppose the very concept of equality that our democracy rests on.

"In no way must we resort to the racist and fascist views that are propagated by these people. Respect is the only viable alternative to such hate, greed and division in the Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of the East end."

George declares war on the borough's BNP

GEORGE Galloway declared war on the BNP at the official launch of Respect for Barking and Dagenham. The left-wing MP - who wants to recruit members and candidates for future borough elections - threw down the gauntlet to the 'jack-booted Holocaust deniers.'

Mr Galloway stood before 100 people at a meeting on Thursday and said: "White working class people who are angry about their position in life have transferred that onto black people and other minorities. Once upon a time they had good wages, good quality council housing, and good public services. But now there's a huge housing problem in Barking and Dagenham, with too many people living in run-down council houses, and thousands on the waiting list. When that happens and suddenly a number of foreigners appear on the same street, the consequences are not surprising. But we mustn't blame those who are taken in by the jack-booted Holocaust deniers with their Hitler packs under their covers at night. We must win them over."

The Tower Hamlets MP cited the success of his party in the East London borough, saying: "Ten years ago, the BNP had a councillor in Tower Hamlets, now it's a no-go zone for them. Respect is here in Barking and Dagenham because we feel there's no way the core Labour vote is going to stop the rise of the BNP - we have to fill that gap."

Mr Galloway rounded off a line-up of guest speakers at the Eton Community Centre, in Ilford, that included the Fire Brigade Union's regional organiser, Paul Embery. He told the POST: "I'm deeply disturbed by the rise of the BNP, and have no hesitation in saying they do need to be tackled head on - we need to build up the left. I was born and bred in Barking and Dagenham, my parents were born and brought up here, and my grandparents were in that generation who fought to prevent the fascists moving in. I think it is incumbent on our generation that their good work is not undone."

The launch was also attended by anti-fascist organisations, Love Music Hate Racism, and Unite Against Fascism.

Galloway blasts Blair in Brum speech

RESPECT MP George Galloway branded Tony Blair a "murderer" and vowed to bring him to justice over the war in Iraq in a rousing speech to anti-war campaigners in Birmingham. Addressing a meeting of the Birmingham Anti-War Coalition last night, Mr Galloway was met by rapturous applause as he slated the Prime Minister.

"I'm obsessed by this murderer Blair who has created this utter disaster in Iraq," he told an audience of around 100 campaigners at Carrs Lane Church in the city centre. "I don't care if he leaves Government this month or next year, I will devote my life to pursuing him and making sure he is brought to justice."

The MP for Bethnal Green and Bow said the anti-war movement should create its own Parliament as he condemned Birmingham MPs and councillors who represent the mainstream political parties. "We've got a lot of MPs in Birmingham, most of them are nodding donkeys," he added. "We've got a lot of councillors in Birmingham who are also nodding donkeys. If we send them to the town hall and send them to Parliament don't expect them to do anything. We are now the repository of the hopes of the people of this country, there are no other repositories remaining."

Condemning the war in Afghanistan, Mr Galloway also joked over the US Vice President Dick Cheney's close shave yesterday. Mr Cheney escaped harm after being caught up in a suicide bombing, which killed 23 people outside the main US military base in Afghanistan and was claimed by the Taliban to be an attempted assassination of the Vice President's life.

"I suppose we should thank God he survived the blast, but I just can't bring myself to," said Mr Galloway, which was met with laughter from his audience. He claimed he believed war will be declared on Iran within days and feared Prince Harry will be its victim. "Iran will respond fiercely, it will be the most expensive mistake made in history," he said. "It will cost the lives of the thinning troops of south Iraq, where the Queen's grandson has just been sent."

Mr Galloway praised the coalition's chairwoman, Salma Yaqoob, and the group's work for leading the anti-war movement in Birmingham. "Birmingham is famous beyond comparison with most places for its vibrant anti-war movement," he added. "This coalition has worked tirelessly since 9/11. It must continue to do so."
