i'd never really heard of him until murdoch tried to stitch him up, but from what i've learnt so far, like you faceless, i'm pretty much in agreement with him on a whole range of issues
how come all the best politicians seem to be from scotland |

... I'll give these a listen, I have an open mind on Tommy, although the perma tan worries me a bit.
Luke asks "how come all the best politicians seem to be from scotland" ... well, not in all cases Luke (Bliar, Brown for example? ...) Although I agree there are some very fine politicians from north of the border. Maybe it's more to do with history? Also, in the south, there are many Scots involved in the trades union movement, I'm a member of the CWU (Communication Workers Union) and we have many good Scottish members in higher positions.

sounds like a nice geezer, I listened to the first - top - one. If Scotland does become a friendly socialist state you can expect a few newcomers from the south, and I'm not talking of England alone |

This one is a must.
TS interviews Paddy Joe Hill who was one of the men who went on to become known as the Birmingham Six. He tells his shocking account of his arrest for the Birmingham pub-bombings and his treatment at the hands of police officers and prison warders in the days afterwards. |

... just managed to purchase a paperback copy of Paddy Hill's book 'Forever Lost, Forever Gone' on Ebay for 50 pence, ... well pleased but slightly confused because I checked on Amazon before Ebay and was shocked to see the prices ranging from £40 to £120 ... anyone got a clue why this should be? |

Police probe Sheridan 'bug' claim
Police are investigating a complaint from Scottish politician Tommy Sheridan that he has been bugged. The Solidarity MSP's staff called in officers on Thursday after a "device" was found in his car while he was travelling back to Holyrood. Lothian and Borders Police have taken the item away for examination.
Mr Sheridan, who last year won a court case against the News of the World, said he had reported the incident to police but declined to comment further. The former Scottish Socialist Party leader won £200,000 in damages from the tabloid newspaper over stories which alleged he was a "swinger" and had cheated on his wife Gail. Following the verdict prosecutors ordered police to carry out a criminal investigation into allegations of perjury during the defamation case. The News of the World is seeking to overturn the court's verdict and an appeal is due to be heard in December. The tabloid later produced a video it claimed showed Mr Sheridan admitting he had visited a swingers' club. The footage was dismissed as a "concoction" by the MSP, who claimed to be the victim of "sinister forces".
After the tape emerged, Mr Sheridan told a press conference that he believed the British state was orchestrating a plot against him. He said: "The state has a fine history of trying to destabilise and undermine socialist movements or trade union struggles. And when the history of this whole episode is written about, I think you'll find that MI5 certainly was involved."
The trial split the Scottish Socialist Party, with senior members and MSPs giving evidence for both sides. The acrimony within the party culminated in Mr Sheridan and another MSP, Rosemary Byrne, leaving to set up the breakaway left-wing party Solidarity. Colin Fox, who replaced Mr Sheridan as SSP convener, said he was "flabbergasted" by the latest development. The MSP said: "It's another bizarre twist in the tale. I'm as surprised as anybody by this. I don't know who would want to bug Tommy Sheridan. I await with interest to find out what this item is that Lothian and Borders Police have picked up."

This news is hot off the press with the story being posted only 90 minutes ago - I'm sure this will become quite a story if it does turn out to be a bug.
here's an interview with him on BBC Reporting Scotland

This report is about a comedy event set up as a fund-raiser for Solidarity - the main act was Mark Steel...
Quote: | HE'S a card, Tommy Sheridan. This benefit for the Solidarity Party was barely ten minutes old when the MSP, acting as compère, recited a Hector Nichol joke about a brothel. Granted, the material was borrowed, but after questioning Mark Nelson's claim to be Scottish comedian of the year over Jack McConnell, Sheridan eased into his hosting role, capably nailing a dicey line about Ian Paisley's final moments. Support act Andy Sir t produced a fine gag about the Commonwealth Games arriving in Sighthill, while Nelson misread the crowd by equivocating the death of Iraqi kids with the pleasures of Police Academy, only winning them back with his "ugly pal" closing routine.
Main act Mark Steel opened by feigning surprise the gig had lasted so long without a split in the room; "a record for a socialist meeting". Showing his support for Sheridan with an unflattering recreation of the News of the World's swingers story, which nevertheless amounted to a robust denunciation, the Kent-born comic then thrilled the comrades by imagining Joan Bakewell, John Pilger and Noam Chomsky sharing the Big Brother house with George Galloway.
Most of the subsequent material was a few years old, but still relevant, chiefly relating historical English pomposity to contemporary English pomposity. Having dealt uneasily with a Gaelic heckle, Steel accidentally evoked the name of the SSP to pantomime hisses, but otherwise this was a solid performance in slightly strange circumstances. |
