Counseling officials in Maryland are being heavily criticized for introducing a lesson to four different schools in which students were supposed to chew and pass around the same piece of gum.

The lesson was created by the Rockville (Md.) pregnancy counseling center in order to show students how easily sexually transmitted diseases are spread from person to person.

A speaker from the counseling center asked students to chew the same piece of gum to see how many would be willing to do it. School officials say at least 100 students participated in the exercise, but not all of them chewed the gum.

The county director of school health services called the lesson unsanitary and unacceptable. Many parents were also angered by the issue.

School officials say employees from the counseling center will not be asked to speak to their students again in the future.

That's downright disgusting, not to mention dangerous. This is one of those times where if people were going to sue I'd fully agree with them angry

That is so disgusting.

I have lessons that you can do that show the same thing without making the children chew gum or share anytype of food.

Whoever these counselors are they need to go back and learn some basic skills.

How gross! That's utterly ridiculous in this day and age..... that's some major infection potential. As Sky mentioned, there are other ways of teaching this kind of lesson.

That's one of the ones we use too. There's so many ways This was just uncalled for.

Another way that we've done it was with a used nasty toothbrush and ones that were in packages.

That is absolutly disgusting. They should be more than heavily criticized. They weren't even using common sense...sheesh.
