Shilpa Shetty AdBollywood megastar and Celebrity Big Brother housemate Shilpa Shetty showed how much she hates cruelty to animals by posing as a tiger – stripped down to her stripes and crouched in a small cage – for a stunning PETA India ad to illustrate the misery of animals used in circuses. With the strapline “Beaten, Lonely and Abused – Boycott the Circus”, the ad encourages the actor’s legions of fans around the world to boycott circuses with animal acts.

Why is Shilpa so upset by animal acts? Animal circuses portray a distorted view of wildlife and of domestic animals like horses and dogs. In contrast to the glittery image the circus tries to project, the lives of animals who are forced to perform repetitious, confusing and often painful tricks are miserable. Animals do not naturally stand on their heads or jump through rings of fire, so circus handlers use whips, electric shock prods and other tools of torture to train them. Circus animals work based on fear, knowing they will be hurt badly if they do not obey. A diverse range of animals is used in circuses in the UK – from tigers and camels to ducks and parrots. Some circuses in Europe even use animals like hippos and rhinos.

“By no means was I comfortable during the photo shoot crouched in that small cage”, explained Shilpa. “But what were a few fleeting moments of discomfort for me compared to what life must be like for the precious animals held captive in the circus? These once dignified animals only leave their cages, which are barely larger than the size of their bodies, for a few minutes each day to be forced into the ring to perform tricks which make no sense and are upsetting to them. The best way to help animals suffering in circuses is to boycott the circus.”

From Bollywood to Hollywood, other celebrities who have helped PETA spotlight cruelty to animals used in entertainment include Alec Baldwin, Goldie Hawn and Kim Basinger for PETA US and Isha Koppikar, Amisha Patel, Rahul Khanna and Rahul Dev for PETA India.

This isn’t the first time that one of PETA’s celebrity supporters has been in the Celebrity Big Brother house. Celebrity Big Brother 2006 featured Dennis Rodman, Traci Bingham and Jodie Marsh!

Jade Goody is surrounded by security as she arrives in Mumbai to appear on India's Big Brother

Jade Goody was surrounded by security as she arrived at Mumbai airport to appear on the Indian version of Big Brother. Dressed respectfully in a head to toe black outfit which disguised her figure, the shamed reality television star was ushered along by bodyguards. The 27-year-old who was accused of bullying Shilpa Shetty will appear on the Bigg Boss, which in an ironic twist will be hosted by the Bollywood star. Producers of the show have offered Miss Goody £50,000 plus expenses to appear on the two-week programme. She is due sign a contract after a final meeting with her advisers.

The TV personality embarked on her Indian adventure yesterday morning when she was driven from her Essex home to the airport by her on/off boyfriend Jack Tweedy. It is a brave move for Miss Goody, whose effigy was burnt on the streets of India after she referred to her fellow contestant as 'Shilpa Poppadom'.

Some 54,000 viewers complained to Ofcom and Channel 4 about the perceived racism on the show. After she was evicted, Miss Goody said she was 'embarrassed and disgusted' by her own behaviour in the house but denied she was a racist. Gordon Brown, who was then Chancellor, was forced to defend Britain as a 'country of fairness and tolerance'.

Miss Goody's advisers are adamant that the new move is a gamble worth taking to reinvigorate her flagging career. They insist she will be able to turn her image around by appearing on the new show, called Big Boss in India, which starts on August 17. A source close to Miss Goody said: 'For Jade, it's a chance to show that she is not a racist. She is the first to admit that she did have her problems with Shilpa, but this will be like a role reversal and a chance to show India and the world what she is really like.'

Jade Goody breaks down after being told she has cancer - in the Diary Room

Jade Goody, who became famous from her stint on reality television show Big Brother, received the devastating news that she has cancer while in the Diary Room of the Indian version of the show, it has emerged. The 27-year-old was a contestant on Bigg Boss 2 when she was called to the Diary Room to speak to her UK doctor who told her the results of a recent biopsy. It is not clear whether she has womb or cervical cancer but the latter is far more common in women of her age.

The mother-of-two broke down in tears and sobbed to housemates she had suffered some 'bad news' and that she had to leave the house. She was immediately withdrawn from the programme and was last night being flown home to begin treatment.

Her spokesman Mark Thomas said: 'It is pretty obvious that she was looking forward to her time in the house but her health is the first priority and she is flying back for treatment and more tests.' While cervical cancer has an 83 per cent survival rate, it kills more than 800 women each year and is the second most common form of the disease for women under 35 after breast cancer.

Jade had entered the Bigg Boss house after undergoing tests at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex after her third cancer scare and following four mystery collapses earlier this month. But just three days after entering the house, she was told the devastating news yesterday by a specialist from the UK who was patched through to the Diary Room to speak to her.

A source said: 'She was called into the Diary Room and spoke to her agent and then her consultant in the UK. She just burst into tears, ran out and said to housemates "I have cancer".' Show bosses said the scenes will not be aired when the show is transmitted later tonight.
