Israeli law blind to real titles Court disallows appeal while forcing Palestinians in East jerusalem out of homes.

With the freeze on colony construction having only just come to an end, already 28 Palestinian families from the Shaikh Jarrah Arab neighbourhood have been ordered by the court to evict their homes. Seven of these families are literally on the street even as there is the looming threat of more people being forced out of their homes. The Israeli colonists had fabricated documents that were subsequently approved by the Israeli Supreme Court, top Palestinian officials said on Tuesday. This has been confirmed by a number of heads of non-governmental organisations in occupied Jerusalem.
The colonists say they own a huge plot of land in the Shaikh Jarrah neighbourhood and stress that a rabbi has also been buried in the area. They furnished false documents in the court asserting their claim to the land. Zeyad Al Hamouri, who heads the Jerusalem Centre for Social and Economic Rights, says the actual owner of the land is Darwish Hijazi, who produced documents from Turkey to back up his claim. However the court refused to recognise the titles, observing it was too late to file an appeal. Pleas that it had taken time for the documents to arrive from Turkey fell on deaf ears. Hijazi died during the litigation and it was left to his children to produce the actual land deeds.
The 28 evicted Palestinian families have been living in the area since 1948 in houses which they built themselves following an agreement between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and the Jordanian government to address the plight of Jordanian refugees. The Jordanian government was supposed to register the land in the names of the families but for some reason it failed to do so and the matter has never been resolved. After the 1967 occupation of East Jerusalem, Israelis claimed the plot of land was the property of the custodian general and said the families living on it were simply tenants who should be evicted once their tenancy contracts expired. The evicted families are said to be shocked that the owner failed to produce the land records on time.
Already plans are afoot to raze the entire neighbourhood and build 250 new houses. Approval was obtained from the Jerusalem Municipality even before the supreme court verdict, Al Hamouri said.

Settlers torch, vandalize Nablus school

Ma'an- A group of Israeli settlers broke into an all girls' school in the Nablus district village of As-Sawiya on Wednesday, setting fire to its storehouse containing furniture and unused sports equipment, the headmistress said.
Maysoon Sawalha said the school's cleaning woman arrived to find the lock on the main door broken as well as that of the storehouse, with all its contents torched. The fire did not spread to the rest of school because the water main is located in the storehouse she said, adding that "otherwise the whole school would have been set on fire."
Settlers had also written racist slogans on the school's walls, including "regards from the hill tops". This is not the first attack on the school. Many attacks were carried out previously, the last of which was last year when settlers intercepted one of the classrooms and fired rounds of ammunition and gas canisters," Sawalha said. An Israeli military spokeswoman said a complaint had been filed with Israel's Civil Administration and that the body was now directly in touch with Palestinian Authority officials to "keep things quiet" in the area. Israeli police, she added, are investigating the incident.
Sawalha called on international organizations to work on stopping such attacks "that put the life of the girls on risk causing them to suffer psychologically and panic out of such attacks."The suspected arson follows a wave of reports from Palestinian farmers that settlers have been setting fire to agricultural land since the beginning of the traditional olive harvest in October.
On 4 October, Israeli settlers were suspected of setting fire to a Bethlehem village mosque, after ransacking it and setting fire to the carpets. Director of PA Ministry of Religious Endowment in Bethlehem Muhammad Ayish at the time describing the arson as a "campaign against everything Palestinian."On Tuesday, an Israeli rights group said that 90 percent of claims filed against settlers in the West Bank for assault to person or property against Palestinians fail to secure a conviction.

Settlers vandalise West Bank Muslim cemetery: witness

KAFR QADDUM, Palestinian Territories — Several Muslim graves at a cemetery in the West Bank were vandalised by Jewish settlers early on Friday, a witness said as Israel opened a probe into the case. "They painted anti-Palestinian slogans and Stars of David," Ayman Joma, whose house adjoins the cemetery in Kafr Qaddum near Nablus in the northern West Bank, told AFP.
The walls of his house were also daubed with slogans in Hebrew including "Vengeance from the young men of the hills," a reference to radical Jewish settlers, and "Sell your house, go, and don't ask any questions." Joma said those responsible came from the nearby settlement of Qaddumim.
A spokesman for the Israeli military told AFP: "The army considers this to be a very serious case of vandalism, as it does similar incidents in the same area over the last two weeks." The spokesman and witnesses said soldiers had begun to clean the slogans off the vandalised graves. Israeli police are investigating the incident.
Witnesses said brawls erupted later between villagers from Kafr Qaddum and Jewish settlers, and that Israeli soldiers intervened to restore calm. A military spokesman said he was unaware of the reported incident.

I remember a TV drama (written by Johnny Speight, the guy who wrote the Alf Garnett shows) which focussed on Nazi skinheads in the UK and how they would vandalise Jewish graves. The end of the show had some Russian Jews, who happened to be ex-army, battering the skinheads.
The Jewish settlers are now the Nazi skinheads. What a disgrace.
'Settlers up assaults on Palestinian kids'

A new study has revealed that Israeli settlers have intensified acts of violence against Palestinian children over the past two years. The study conducted by Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCI) said on Monday that it has investigated 38 cases of settler violence against minors. The attacks caused the deaths of three children and left 42 others injured, the rights group said.
The study also found the attacks are usually carried out in groups and include verbal harassment, intimidation, physical assault and the destruction of property. Physical assault and intimidation was reported in at least 15 cases, and stone throwing in another nine incidents. In 13 of the cases, settlers opened fire, killing three children and injuring another 10.
Verbal abuse was documented in almost every case, according to the report.
"Continued settlement expansion and a growing settler population in the occupied territory have severely impacted the security of the Palestinian population, particularly children, whose lives are increasingly threatened by willful attacks perpetrated by extremist settlers," the report said.
In eight cases, soldiers colluded with the assailants either by joining in, turning a blind eye to or punishing the victims rather than the perpetrators. Israel's failure to enforce the law and hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions has "created an atmosphere in which settlers enjoy impunity and Palestinians live in fear," the DCI study concluded.
