'Holocaust Denier' Is Held In UK
October 01, 2008
A revisionist historian wanted in Germany for alleged Holocaust denial has appeared in court. Dr Fredrick Toben, 64, was arrested by Scotland Yard's extradition unit as he passed through London's Heathrow Airport. He was detained under an EU arrest warrant issued by the District Court in Mannheim, Germany, that accuses him of publishing material on the internet "of an anti-Semitic and/or revisionist nature".
Between 2000 and 2004 Toben posted information online that denied, approved of or played down the mass murder of Jews by the Nazis, the charge alleges. The Australian told City of Westminster Magistrates' Court he did not consent to being extradited to Germany. Claiming he was the victim of "legal persecution" he said: "It's a witch trial mentality in Germany concerning this matter, which is not the case in England yet."
Tina Whybraw, representing the authorities in Mannheim, described how Toben was arrested on an aircraft travelling from the United States to Dubai. She said he was seen to move seats after detectives boarded the plane, adding: "Police officers assert that was a bid to avoid detection." When cautioned, he told them: "You can't arrest me on British soil."
Toben said he was sentenced to a period in prison in Germany in 1999 but returned to Australia after being granted bail. He also told the court he was currently facing jail in Australia in a matter relating to material posted on the website of the Adelaide Institute, of which he is director. The historian urged the court to set him free, saying: "I can't run anywhere - the world is my prison."
District Judge Nicholas Evans refused Toben bail and he was remanded in custody until another extradition hearing on Friday. On hearing this, the Australian said: "Your Honour, it's a fait accompli, it's a done deal so to speak. It would take great moral courage and intellectual courage to let me go."

Three trucks full of weaponry removed from bomber's home
1 Sep 09
thelocal.de
Two weeks after Hessian police arrested a man who bombed a family's home in Viernheim near Mannheim, officers closed roads early on Wednesday to transport three trucks full of explosives and other weaponry confiscated from his apartment. “In total 16 vehicles were part of the operation, three trucks for the explosives and 13 other vehicles to secure the convoy,” Viernheim police spokesperson Ferdinand Derigs told The Local.
On August 19, a 44-year-old suspect identified only as Jürgen K. allegedly set off an explosion around 6:00 am at a single-family home in the town near Mannheim, slightly injuring two adults and two children as they escaped through a broken window. He may also have been involved in another explosion in Weinheim, some five kilometres away in Baden-Württemberg, which involved a hand grenade but caused no injuries.
The man fled and barricaded him in his nearby apartment wearing camouflage and a gas mask. From there he called police and threatened further explosions. A tense overnight stand-off followed, with some 500 police and emergency workers evacuating the area and surrounding the building. On August 20, he surrendered and was arrested by special commando officers. Nearby residents were not allowed to return to their homes on Theodor-Heuss-Allee until two days later on the evening of August 22 due to police efforts to remove his arsenal of explosives, chemicals and weapons, Derigs told The Local.
The weaponry was stored at a temporary facility before Wednesday morning's operation. “We won’t say just how much or what was there, but it was three trucks’ worth,” Derigs said. The explosives will be destroyed at an undisclosed location.
Meanwhile Jürgen K. remains imprisoned on remand under suspicion of attempted murder and violating weapons laws. While his motive remains unclear, police said that he was being evicted by his landlord after failing to pay rent for several months.

I've included this story in this thread purely because the town of Mannheim was mentioned - and also because it's very likely that this Jürgen K character isn't just some common-or-garden nutter. 3 truck loads of weapons! That's enough to start a small war. |
