Manson Family member and staunch Charlie supporter, Squeaky Fromme, is to be released from prison on August 16. She is in for an assasination attempt on President Gerald Ford. While not involved in any of the 1969 murders, she was always the most loyal and outspoken of Manson's girls. I have to say, this just gives me the creeps. I wish they would have kept her in. Texas is just to darn close....

Reading up a bit, I can't really see why she was charge with attempted murder - she didn't actually fire the gun or hurt anyone. But I don't know much else about the story.

You can't aim a gun at the Pres...it's just not done, dawling...anyway, she really just gave the authorities to amunition they needed to put another Manson family member away. Even in '75, everyone was still afraid of anyone with any Manson connections. She was just so resolute and so loyal, even once she was separated from Manson and he was in prison, she was still convinced he was the second coming. Those murders in 1969 really brought a naive US out of the the summer of love and peace and really turned something that may have begun as a peaceful rebellion into something ugly.

I read that the law which sentenced her to such a long time in jail was brought in after Kennedy was murdered. That's understandable to an extent, but why was she even allowed anywhere near Ford in the first place? Bobby Kennedy had been killed in a close-up situation just a few years earlier and they still allowed this woman close enough to be considered a threat?

The FBI handlers should have been jailed for failing to do their job and she should have got a couple of years at maximum in a state hospital.

A non descript girl with a kerchief on her head, standing in the crowd to see the President....who would notice? She is a fairly mousey sort, so ....

Wasn't she quite well known for having stood outside court while the Manson trial went on?

The point being of course, that she didn't attempt to murder Ford. You have to seriously injure someone for that charge to stand in any fair court.

Depends on the State. If you knew the murder was going to take place or were present and did nothing to stop it or report it afterwards, you can be held just as responsible. Some States do not have accessory to murder charges, so you either helped it happen or didn't. And personally, I do think that in some instances that can be fair. If you know someone is going to be murdered and you do nothing to prevent it, you have helped kill that person as well.

but nobody was harmed - that's the point.

Her only real crime was in being a bit mental.

I see your point, Face. She didn't actually do anything, but her intent was clear no matter what she says now. I think it may hvae been inexperience with guns that there was no bullet in the chamber. I don't know if there were any mental tests done at the time...maybe that would have made the outcome different.

Or a very good actress.....Seriously, I do see your point, Face, I just find it a little unsettling that a Manson family member has been let out.
