Has anyone got any experience of chipping a console? I want to get my compact ps2 working with copies, but because it involves soldering I want to check it first... also, I'm planning to get a flash-card writer for the GBA/DS for my nephew for christmas, but there's quite a few kinds available, so any info on those would be good too.

I realise it's probably a long shot, but you never know!

I used to use a Swap Magic on my PS2. Requires no chipping at all.

ok, I'm looking at this R4 thing here and it looks perfect

www.consoleup.com/shop/Console/R4-DS/R4-DS-for-Nintendo-DS

but do I actually need the extra SD memory for it?

Yeha, the micro SD card goes into the R4 and that's where the games get installed onto. They are extremely easy to set up though and come with instructions on a CD anyway with the files needed.

I also highly recommend Consoleup.com too, it's where i got mine from and they got it to me the next day (i did pay for the next day delivery though, i'm an impatient bugger). You also get the Micro SD card USB reader with the pack from there too.

I'd also get it soon too, as they seem to go out of stock everywhere quite quick.

There's really cool homebrew apps for the DS too...like a wireless MIDI keyboard for your computer to use on music making programs, msn, irc, etc. It's really cool and useful even if you don't want it for games! Smile

I too am about to get something akin to the R4.

2 of my boys want new DS lites.

After some research, as Griffo said, yes to the SD card Smile

What I have found at the moment is that not all are made equal (units & not so much SD cards (but obviously those all differ in specs too)) & a few will not see more than 2 GB on an 8 GB SD.

So it's worth checking forums for the unit you end up with (Revision number etc) & seeing if there is a max that the unit will read.
