Mexican author charged with cannibalism

MEXICO CITY, October 12 (RIA Novosti) - The unpublished author of a horror novel entitled "Cannibalistic Instincts" has been arrested in Mexico City on charges of cannibalism, local media reported on Friday. In an official announcement to the press, a Mexico City Attorney General spokesman said Jose Luis Calva had been arrested on Monday near his home in the capital's Guerrero neighborhood. He added that the writer had attempted to flee the scene, but had been run over by a car. He was still in hospital on Thursday.

Police had initially called on Calva in connection with the disappearance of his girlfriend, Alejandra Galeana, a local pharmacy employee. Body parts, reportedly belonging to the writer's ex-girlfriend, were subsequently found in Calva's fridge by police. Local media sources also reported that police discovered many other human remains during a search of Calva's living quarters, including a frying pan full of human flesh and human bones stuffed into a cereal box.

In his first statement after being arrested, Calva told police he was a great admirer of Hannibal Lector, the character portrayed by British actor Anthony Hopkins in a series of movies based on novels by Thomas Harris. Calva is also reported to have been a screenplay writer, specializing in horror. None of his efforts have so far been adapted for the big screen.

Dutch cannibalism storm as TV presenters deny stunt was hoax
'Cannibal' Dutch TV presenters Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno, who ate each others flesh in front of a live studio audience, have denied the stunt was a hoax.

The two men apparently had small chunks of flesh taken from their stomach and buttocks and cooked before those pieces were fed to each other, as part of the Dutch show Proefkonijnen - meaning 'Guinea Pigs'. Thijs Verheij, spokesman for channel BNN who broadcast the show, insisted the stunt was real. Some people believe its a hoax, yes, but I can tell you it isnt, he said.

The sequence in the show - which sees the pair answer 'stupid questions' by performing bizarre stunts - sees a chef frying the flesh of either presenter in a frying pan with oil but no seasoning. The two men then sit down for a candlelit dinner, although appeared hesitant about taking the first bite. Both have reportedly refused to comment on their dining experience, saying simply there was 'nothing really that special about it'. Mr Storm later told ABC News that 'it was weird to look into the eyes of a friend when you are chewing on his belly.'

The full-length clip will be aired on Dutch television on Wednesday although BNN-TV is not expecting any legal issues as the participants were volunteers. However, a lawyer has warned the show's producers that while cannibalism is not against the law in the Netherlands, both presenters and the surgeon who carried out the operation could face legal battles.

BNN-TV previously hit the headlines in 2007 after the network claimed it would show a game show where kidney transplant patients compete for a donor organ. This raised flags from the general public and civil rights groups, but the show didn't air as it was identified as a hoax. The network claimed it aimed to raise awareness of the lack of organ donors.
